NCT Question

New rule that cars over 10 years only get a 1 year cert.

    EDIT:
Bleh just looked at dates. They were done within days of each other. Dunno how 1 got a 2 year nct tbh. Looks like the guy with the 2 year cert got lucky. Should have just got a 1 year cert. It's all automated afaik so dunno how.

Also removed most of original post as re-reading it doesn't make much sense.

The cars were tested within 3 days of each other, 17th and 14th of Oct.12

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 4,255 ✭✭✭Yawns

Ya I saw that so edited. It's weird. They both should have gotten a 1 year cert. Some mix up that gave 1 guy a 2 year cert. Afaik it's all done via computer. Once a car passes, the tester prints a page without imputing much if anything at all. The next due date is already assigned.

2003 car is only 9 yrs old innit? 2 year cert then

    No it isn't.
NCTs which were done on those cars are 10th years first registration anniversary NCTs, so therefore cert should be for one year.

It must be a mistake of NCT centre issuing the discs, or otherwise fake disc.

I'm not suggesting that it's a fake or a mistake, I thought maybe there may some anomalie in the NCT system.

Possibly the one with one year cert was fires reged on 01/01 and other on 30/12 same year. Just a guess.

Nope, as said already both cars are first registered in January so it would been 10th year.

Noe both regged in middle of January. The one with the 2 year cert is first regged on 9th January with the other first regged on 13th. Generally you look at the NCT valid til / due date and it's the very next day is when the car was first registered.

    Exactly.
If someone still have doubts, you can go to NCTS website and try to book any of those cars for NCT providing first registration date of 09/01/2003 for Skoda, and 13/01/2003 for Hyundai.

Obviously NCT can't be booked at this stage, because none of those cars are due inspection, but if they were due, anyone could log in and book, reschedule or cancel NCT appointment.

That's why displaying NCT discs on ads in not a great idea.

By mistake I meant something like incorrectly working computer system at NCT center, or maybe just genuine NCT tester mistake.
I don't know how their system works.

But a lot of people wouldn't be showing close up images of an NCT disc in the ads if it was out of date or close to expiry. It's shown close up in pics because people want to show off the fact that they have a long period to go til the next NCT.

I still wouldn't display it for public, the same way as I don't display my passwords or pin numbers :)
Info from NCT disc gives access to my private account on NCT website, so why would anyone want to display it to public.

Not much help but if you really want to cut down on it a tiny bit, you could attach the disc display holder upside down on the windscreen visor. That way it's out of the way facing inside the car and you can simply put it down for a guard to read at a checkpoint. He will most likely moan and tell you you need it to be in a certain spot by law but you really don't, it just has to be displayed. It however means you'd need to flip it down and display it whilst parked in public.

But privately you won't need to have it on display.

I assume the one with the two years was imported and thus due a NCT in 2012 =rather than 2013 in which case it would be 9 years old when due the NCT and thus get two years.

Both cars have 3 digit numbers in their regs, which usually means the car wasn't imported.

If NCT was due in 2012, then no way disc could be valid untill 01/2015.

However it would be possible, that car was f.e. first registered in May 2003 in UK. Then imported to Ireland in January 2011. NCT due in Janurary 2013, and therefore this NCT could be already done with next due date January 2015. (as at the due date 01/2013 car would be only 9 years and 9 months so less than 10).

But in this particular case of this skoda it isn't the case.
    Car wasn't imported.

Maybe the guy with the Skoda (best car ever built, FACT!) is just lucky, after all he was expecting 1 baby and gets 2 babies, similarly he was expecting 1 years NCT but got 2.

Here's another example of 1 year's test. The reason I asked the question is I'm interested in buying a 2003 car, and the NCT expires on January 7th 2013, the car will be tested before this, so I will know within the next few weeks will it get a 1 or 2 year NCT. In my opinion it should be 1 year, but the Skoda ad got me thinking.

It should get 1 year as you think but please do let us know either way. It would be interesting to see if a 2 year cert gets issued.

    Skoda must be a mistake.

imported some time ago maybe, when nearly new and thus first registered HERE in other than 2003?

No. You'll get a cert for April 2014 if you do it ninety days in advance of the 2013 expiry date

Eh, your car is 10 years old on the date of it's next NCT.

Cars ten years and older have to be tested every year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 461 ✭✭buzzing147

    It's not..

Why did they change it from 2 years down to 1 year? The test is thorough enough for the cars to be safe on the roads for 2 years. Money is the reason. Simple.

No test is through enough to make sure car will be safe enough the next day, not mentioning 2 years.
    Car deteriorate pretty quickly.
When I see what kind of bangers some people drive, even though they still have NCT, I'm truly for annual testing even of newer vehicles.
    NCT costs 55 euro.
It's really one of the lowest costs related to motoring.

A lot can change in a 10+ year old car in two years; after the first year the valid NCT doesnt really mean a whole lot in terms of how safe/roadworthy the car is.

I say bring back the days when there were aulde 1981 opel kadetts etc flying around the roads with woeful engines and bald tyres...people are too posh nowadays, these big cars and most of them owned by the bank

    ...because the car is older?

Do you really believe if you pass the NCT your car is 'grand' for the next two years?

yes oil filter brake discs and pads all changed when needed, what i mean is, i dont see any reason why they cancelled the 2 year disc and reduced it to 1 year, apart from money that is, because the celtic tiger didnt show up.

You honestly can't see that it's because older cars are more prone to corrosion and electrical faults etc.?

Ive seen 10-15 year old cars that are barely roadworthy 2 months after the NCT, let alone 2 years. A year is more than long enough to declare a car of that age to be roadworthy.

€50 and a couple of hours inconvenience for the owner is a more than fair price to pay if it keeps the kind of heaps of junk off the roads that we used to see pre-NCT.

Just to throw a spanner in the works here and to use a link that was first highlighted on this forum to see if a car has a valid NCT:

    http://www.carsireland.ie/add.php

The Skoda 03WW679 has no expiry date detailed for its NCT
The Hyundai 03KK621 has an expiry date Jan 14.

I know the database is not 100% accurate, but every car I tried in that link has proved correct that if there is no expiry date detailed on that website, there is no current valid NCT on it, so make 100% sure the cert is not a forgery as there are too many of them out there.

    Be careful out there folks!
