In general, how long do the charcoal micro filter(s) last for a car's cabin? Is there a rule of thumb like 5years, 10years? How do you know when one has gone bad?

Thanks in advance for any constructive feedback.

On new age bmw's they have their own service item within the OBC. BMW also recommend you change them at every oil service.

Think that's right, about 30k km officially. Its easy to take it out and check it anyway.

Expensive in the factors, about 45 when I priced it, they're much cheaper online.

Their change interval is set by the vehicle manufacturer. For most cars without condition based servicing intervals(like BMW's) its every 2 years or 30k ish.
