If you're colour blind, you'd probably even have difficulty installing a head unit...

Wiring will be impossible for you, essential part of motor mechanics and very heavy emphasis on it during the off-the-job phases of the apprenticeship.

Well they look for a vision test or anything like that in FAS. If you can find an employer that'll take you then fire away once you feel you'd be confident withy the wiring.

If he does this he can't become a registered apprentice with FAS. They require a completed ishihara (unsure of spelling) colour blindness test before registration can be complete.

About 10% of guys are colour blind so it must be a common issue. I don't think wiring would be such a problem as the most problematic colours arean't used but matching colour shades in respraying etc might be.

I am fairly badly red green colour blind and am a qualified lithographic printer ( I think you'l agree colour vision is important for that ) Anyway - I managed it by having my employer tell FAS that I was the only candidate they would consider for the position and if I wasn't getting the job - there was no job. FAS wouldn't put a lad out of a job so I was in ( this is in the 90's btw )

I dont see it being a major issue for mechanic other than you having to check and mark the odd wire if you are dong electrical stuff.

I dont see how this would work. Setting up a "new" install at a factory as a factory line worker might have some chance, but how the hell would he troubleshoot a used car which may have old wiring, modified wiring that needs sorting or replace wire with the standard colour types etc?

Im trying to fix a high idle on my Merc for weeks now, reading the Merc Engineer guides:
Test Green Blue wire, range = 680 to 1200 Ohm.
Test Red Green wire, range = 3.5 to 5v.

These are oil cracked old wires with faded colours, its hard to test even having full colour vision.

So yeah, he can measure the 2 wires and see there is a difference, but he doesnt know if the wire with the resistance reading doesnt also have a some volts running through it and vice versa.

I'm colour blind and never found telling wires apart a problem. I presume its bacause they don't use the shades that are involved. Its not that people can't tell true red and green apart. To pick a standard colour scheme for safety wiring that 10% of the male population can't use would be the height of folly.
What I do find a problem are graphs and maps using multiple colours to show data. In many cases the shades chosen are not distinguishable. Graphic designers, take note.

I was never asked for one of these, what is your source for that?

It's only certain trades. Im on my phone so can't link but just check the FAS website for apprentice registration requirements it's not hard to find.

It may be on the FAS website but in the real world I was never asked for a vision test.

Well I was. Which trade of apprenticeship did you serve?

I started my motor mechanic apprenticeship about 3 years ago and I had to do a colour test

I'm in the same boat. Motor mechanic started in 2009 but never asked for one. Must have been an oversight somewhere along the line so.
