Hi, can anyone confirm if the 1l vvti engine on a 99 vitz could be replaced with the same from an early yaris. My timing chain went and would like to be sure both engines are the same so it would be a straight forward switch, thanks.

If engine's code is the same (1SZ-FE in your case I think) it'd be plug&play job. ;)

Thanks joujoujou, i checked the plate in the engine bay and you're correct 1SZ-FE. Just to make sure, the donor engine needs to have the same code?. Mine is an auto box and has air con so would this or anything else you might know of have any bearing on a re-fit. Also I'm assuming a replacement engine is the way to go rather than a rebuild. This happened yesterday and I have'nt had anyone check the block yet.

Yeah rang them and its €1100. Ouch. Probably around the value of a 99 yaris. If I source a donor engine and get it fitted it might be a bit cheaper. A day and a half in labour in a local indy garage and maybe €300 for an engine without any guarantee and god knows how much miles.

    Have you tried ivi?

But at least youd know its right and get a warranty.

Your problem is its an auto with ac. Dont think there was a yaris equiv so plug and play it wont be; not impossible but i think you will spend more than you think on sourcing and fitting an engine with no provenance.

If its a good clean vitz that you know, i know id consider ivi for an engine.

How many good cars can you buy for €1100 and the scrap price of a vitz?

I know the beauty of jap cars is how they're simply made. Something tells me its a bit more complicated than a plug and play job. A mate of mine in the states is getting a recon engine for his 98 Mustang and has little mechanical experience bar changing oil. As I'm slagging the bejaysus out of him at the moment on facebook please tell me putting a new engine is a complex operation that will take him weeks.

At the back of my mind i know i'll hit a few snags if i source and fit an engine. I think i just needed a prod in the IVI direction. As Andy says there probably was'nt a 99 equilevant here so hopefully IVI will have it done and dusted in a couple days. And of course its a car i know and love (pure lazy driving) and in great condition.

    Yep. :)

I know engines buillt by Japs for JDM may look totally different than those made by them for Europe, but just today got a 100% confirmation from my friend who has JDM toyota. The most important thing is to have exactly the same engine code. All the most basic elements like engines block, head etc. are the same, so even in case couple of parts JDM vs. EU compared, just keep the original ones. When old engine is taken out of the car it wouldn't be a big problem to replace bits and pieces.

Out if interest what was the mileage on your own car that the chain snapped at?

Around 95k mls. In retrospect i heard a noise but not knowing too much about these things thought it was just the age and mileage of the car. E xpensive lesson. From what i can gather this does'nt happen especially on toyotas

It is unlikely to have timing chain broken so early. Theroetically timing chain should last engine's lifetime (in toyotas), in fact, it'll last approx 250.000 km without a problem. :)
