    Hi,

I am a 21 year old male and I have always been shy throughout my childhood and found it hard to make friends. I have been reading up about social anxiety recently though and a few of the "symptoms" equal to what I have but I'm still not 100% sure if I have social anxiety or if I'm just painfully shy. For example, I find it really hard to make small talk and when I meet a new person I just cannot be myself and hardly talk. This has been a huge problem for me throughout my life. Other things include being nervous when talking on the phone and going red when someone talks to me.

Reading up about social anxiety I seen that people are nervous to go outside or go into shops, none of which I have. I have travelled to South America alone and have no problems making presentations to groups of people and stuff like that. This is what is confusing me, is there different levels of social anxiety or something?

Anyway, I am thinking about making an appointment with a counsellor about this and I guess what I'm looking for is people's opinions on doing this? I could be over reacting to all of this and could be paying a counsellor for nothing that will benefit me at all. Should I just go with it?

OP, posters here cannot offer you medical advice and certainly can't speculate on a possible diagnosis. They can just offer advice on your personal issue of whether or not you should go to see someone. And if you're here asking the question, then you probably have a fair idea of the answers you will get!

To all Posters, any posts offering medical advice or offering diagnoses will be deleted, and could result in infractions and bans.

    Thanks,

There are 2 things to never do: Diagnose yourself onlne and have anyone online diagnose you.

Go to a professional if this is impacting on your quality of life or your ability to live a normal life (or at least what you want). The professionals are armed with a lot of tools that random people online aren't.

We have no crystal ball here. If you need advice we're here, but a professional should always ALWAYS be the first step. Good luck
