Ok, Ok before i start writing this mods if you feel this is not be the spirit of the rules then feel free to remove this thread and second, well that will become readily apparent when you read the post.

I've voted at every opportunity that has been afforded to be since turning 18, 6 years ago, and every time i go to vote at my local polling station the presiding officer present at the location is either reading the bible or has one placed on the desk next to the ballot box. Is this the case at all poling stations or is it just mine?? Now I understand that people will say whats my problem (and yes as an atheist i maybe reading into this one a little to much), I have no problem with expression of one's own faith, but what about those that do not practice the Catholic/Christian faith?

I know there are rules concerning political literature not allowed near polling stations but not sure about religious items - you could ask one of the officials or get on to the franchise section in Dept. of the Environment - failing that as they will be shut maybe ask your local TD

I don't really see the problem?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

OP, in this country if you don't have ID/polling card you can swear on the bible that you are who you say you are to be able to vote, or something to that effect. Every polling station will have a bible.

Yes, it is completely ****ing ridiculous.

As far as I remember (and it's been a while since I did the job) the Presiding Officer, if in doubt of voter's identity, may ask them to swear on the bible.

Have never seen it being done. Most people have some form of ID on them.

As for reading it... probably done out of boredom.

Either way, you should complain, loudly. The folks in the polling station like a bit of entertainment... ;)

Ah sure it is a great story to be fair :P

OP, as long as it doesn't interfere with the job he's there to do, I wouldn't think too much into it.

There are bibles at every polling place, as others have pointed out, so that if somebody is required to swear as to their identity or qualification to vote, the wherewithal will be to hand.

I've never seen anyone reading it - and I have voted in many more elections than newkid55 - but I can't see that it's a problem if one of the polling clerks does.
