Just wondering does anyone do or know anyone who does the Performing Arts course in IT Sligo. I'm hoping to do it after the Leaving but having done some research online I cant find anyone who has done particularly well from it. I'd love to hear from someone who has done it who could tell me what they are doing know. Was it worth it?

    Thanks in advance.

I graduated from IT Sligo's Hons BA in Performing Arts last year and I can highly recommend it. In first year you get a chance to do both acting and design and from there you can choose which area you want to specialise in. I chose design and since graduating in June I have worked on two productions, set up my own production company, designed a float for St. Patrick's Day parade and run a number of workshops for children in puppet making. Of the other people who graduated with me one went on to intern with The Abbey, Ireland's national theatre, another got work on Anglo the musical and is now working on Gorilla Days in Ireland. Other graduates have gone on to do their masters in Galway and Dublin. One girl who went on to study in The Factory has just won a scholorship to got study in America and one of this years graduates started with a walk on part in Game of Thrones and now has a speaking part. I could go on and on but I don't want to bore you except to say if you want to do PA then go for it. In my opinion this is the best course in Ireland because it focuses on both the practical and the academic side of Performing Arts and you come out with a great grounding in this area which could take you anywhere. If you have any questions feel free to ask and good luck with the Leaving Cert.

    Hi,

Thanks for your input. I'm starting next week as a mature student and I'm a bit nervous to be honest!! I actually have no interest in being on stage, I want to teach children and adults. Will I learn about this do you think?

    Hi Pennylemon,
It's easy to say don't be nervous but that is a ridiculous thing to say to someone who is about to embark on a totally new life experience, so be as nervous as you like but don't be worried.
Is it drama you would like to teach? There is a module in facilitation in second or third year which focuses on teaching but it is centered around teaching Shakespeare to secondary school teachers. The best thing to do would be to contact one of the faculty and ask them directly. They are really approachable and very helpful. You could try emailing Agnes Palli or Jo Conway, who I think are the course heads, just put their name all lower case all one word @itsligo.ie.
What I will also say is keep an open mind in first year. I went into PA as a seasoned street performer and thought that acting would be the thing for me but after my first year and being exposed to the design element I just fell in love with design. This degree is a great grounding in performing arts and its really up to you where you go with it and how you apply it. Good luck I wish I was starting over again!

the email addresses in Itsligo are in the format lastname.firstname@itsligo.ie So Jo Conway would be conway.jo@itsligo.ie

    palli.agnes@itsligo.ie would be Agnes Palli.

Induction day was a bit scary but found a load of other mature students and the younger students thought I was their age!! Hah... That was a great start lol.

Anyway, start class tommorrow so looking forward to getting stuck in. I have a very open mind as to what I want to do now that I'm older and wiser. Thanks for your input.

Could any recent graduates tell me what the course is like and what are you currently doing(If you know what others are doing also )? I'm more interested in acting for TV / Film to be honest , i'm already in college although i just think about doing this course instead as i'm doing Software Development (Not in IT Sligo). I'm not thinking of switching because the course is bad , it's actually a really good course and i was doing well in it although the thought of doing this every day of my life is just not what i want so i just want to try something new.
