I need some advice from you great car people. Looking at buying a diesel that i'll be driving on a motorway about 3 times a week, in total i'll be doing around 170km a day so 510km a week.
I'll also have 2 or 3 other people in the car(car pooling).
Just wondering what kinds of cars can handle 120kms on a regular basis. I have around 9k to spend. Thanks.

I'd be looking for something with decent power, comfortable seats, decent legroom for both driver and passengers and a few extras like climate control and cruise control for those journeys.

    A few examples:-
    Skoda Superb:

or an outsider like a Hyundai Sonata:

Was hoping to stay with something over '08 due to tax prices as anything over 1.7ish before 08 is just too expensive.

You are spending €9k on a car and worried about a few hundred euro difference in motor tax? Most of the pre 2008 stuff will be cheaper to buy too because most people think this way pushing up prices of 2008 cars. Its like spending €100 to save €10.

BTW the days of cheap motor tax on post 2007 cars are coming to an end.

That's a fair point, once the car is very reliable then i'd go for it. Just been stung with a 04 second hand car after spending 550 on tax so i'm a little gunshy but as i said if the car is a solid motor then i'd go for it.

Have you had a preview of the budget or something?
Yes, we all know there are changes coming but who is to say it won't still be cheap(ish) ?

Not them Nissans if you have taste.

What about a 1.8 to 2.0 Diesel, maybe Passat, Mondeo, Avensis, Skoda as pointed out above?

Haha i thought someone would say that, i'm a family man now so taste doesn't bother me.
Yeah i'll certainty check out the other cars, by the sounds of it they're the type of car i should be going for. I'm just worried about the high mileage on theses cars though, is it a big factor when buying these as i want to get a good few years out of the car i buy?

I am a Family man as well, I would like to think I have taste, might be bad as the OH tells me, but I have some...;)

With regard to high milage, Diesels are made for it. I have 185k klms on my 2008 and, touch wood, still going strong.

Just on that Carzone website, does it make much of a difference to go for a Simi approved dealer?

It will be going up for sure, probably falling into line with the pre 2008 system over a few years. Mine increased by around 40% compared to last year alone so it is not unreasonable to expect a similar increase this year and over the next few years. I doubt very much that pre 2008 motor tax will increase on the same scale as cars on the newer system.

My main point is that too many people are basing their purchase decision on how much the motor tax is at the moment when it is obvious that it will not be cheap for long.

It means diddly squat, they are just a voice of the motor trade consisting of members from the motor trade with their own interests at heart. All you need is to pay your membership fee and you get to hang a nice SIMI member's plaque overhead the showroom door.
