Possible CPU Failure?

I have a Compaq Presario laptop that isn't booting, whenever I turn it on the fan comes on for a second and then the Caps and Num lock lights flash every few seconds. This happened a week or two ago but performing a hard reset (taking out the battery, unplugging the charger and holding the power button down for a minute) fixed it again.

But it's after happening again this evening and this time a hard reset isn't fixing it. According to the trouble shooting guide here it's a CPU failure :(. Anything to do with the motherboard would mean it'll be as cheap to buy a new laptop so I'm wondering has anyone experienced symptoms like these before and it wasn't the CPU and found a fix?

And now it's randomly started working again :/. Anyone got any ideas about preventative measures?
