Just looking at OSM and at the Airport Motorway linking the M1 to the Airport and noticed it just named Airport Motorway. Is this the official name of this tiny stretch or is just slip roads off the M1. I also noticed something similar on the M3(J8) and M2(J3) which have stretches of motorway similar to Airport Motorway. Would it not be better to name these stretches -M132, M135 & M147 instead of just blank unnumbered stretches of roadway. Could they even apply the L-road system on these roads?

The link road is the M1

I have a fixed penalty notice to prove it

Maybe something like signing those spurs as M1(J2), M2(J3), M3(J8)...

    ...or M1-2, M2-3, M3-8...

The M11 and M20 have captive spurs also, albeit not dual two lane. The standard here is to not number them as different.

Something like this would prob be best. Last thing we want is a -M12- Northern Ireland sort of messy layout. Would a signing like (M)N3 (M)N2 (M)N1 System work ? Like the British (M)A- Layout. or would this just confuse people.

I don't see the problem here. It's a very short stretch that leads to the M1 without any intermediate junctions. Signing it as anything other than M1 would be bizarre tbh.

Not only would it confuse people, it wouldn't make any sense. ALL motorways in Ireland use the N-number of the route they're derived from, i.e. the M1 is the part of the N1 classified as motorway, the M2 is the part of the N2 classified as motorway, etc. Even the M50, although it has no non-motorway sections, is referred to as the N50 in law, with the entire route being classified as motorway and hence signposted as M50.

This is totally different from the UK, where Mx and Ax(M) are often totally unrelated. For example, the motorway parts of the A1 are A1(M), but there's also an entirely separate and unrelated M1. The way the classification works in law is different there too, with A1(M) not really being considered a "motorway part of the A1", but rather a different road completely. You can't even assume Ax(M) to mean "motorway section of an A-road", because of cases like the A3(M), which runs along side the A3 (with the M3 quite nearby too).

So as you can see, the Irish system is a lot simpler and doesn't require any descent into the use of brackets. Ironically, the topic that the OP raised is about the only thing the Irish numbering system does have in common with the UK. Short motorway spurs, like this one to Heathrow, are not given their own numbers.

    How about M1.2?
