Real world experience of Audi A8 3.0tdi running costs

    All
I am considering a recent Audi A8 3.0tdi (nearly new: they are available with > 30k off list on 2012 reg)
On paper the fuel economy is incredible for a 250bhp engine

    Urban 35.8 (7.9)
    Ex Urban 50.4 (5.6)
    combined 44.1 (6.4)

I have experience of this engine in a much heavier car (2007), and it runs on average 30mpg and up to 35 on longer trips, but it's 2300 kg Vs 1900kg, and 8 speed auto Vs 6 speed auto, so better would be expected.
In fairness the overall 30mpg was the brocure combined figure for that car, so no complaints. If the brochure figure for the A8 was approachable, it would be impressive. (not I suspect if we use the 0-60 in 6.1 seconds every time...:D)
    Thanks!

If you can afford what must be a 70/80k car, why would you be so worried about MPG. Doesn't make sense.

However, All things being equal, I would expect 32-36mpg would be average for a mixture, given it is a 3.0tdi.

It'll be the cost of parts that will get you when the warrenty runs out

    +1

It's absurd. Even at 20,000 miles per year, the difference in 30MPG and 35MPG is about €600 per year...

The nearly new A8 is already available for €30,000 below list price. At that price the new owners first years depreciation is another €20,000 on top of that.

Thanks for the comments. I kinda set myself up for that:(, and I fully understand that the real cost is deprecation.

I suppose the question would have been more accurate if it was regarding the accuracy of any of the combined figures. Example a BMW 520d probably has a combined figure of close to 55 mpg, but how many people average even close to that.
I am inclined to think the more recent figures are so engineered by manufactures as to be meaningless.

Would a real world figure be 75% of manuf. figures, in general by a figure to think about, (and know it's all about city/ country, weight of boot/ etc)

Again, fuel costs are all relative, and after many years of 30mpg, every little extra is appreciated:)

I know somebody with an 11 250bhp a8 3.0 tdi who gets about 35-38mpg. He drives fairly hard as well

My Dad's oldest friend bought a 2012 A6 3.0TDI (205ps) a few months ago for €49k with no miles on it. It was an ex-demo car and a pretty sweet one at that.

Think he averages late 30's mpg and spends most of him time around Dublin City. Impressive figures from it and the 8-speed box is a dream.
