    Hi.
Myself and oh are hoping to go to the south of France next summer.we will probably have 8 days maybe 7.nit fully sure yet.
We would like to start off with a few days in Nice and the surrounding area and finish off with 3 days over the Spanish border in San Sebastian.
I realise this is a long drive of some 900 km.
With this in mind would a decent itinerary involve spending 3 nights in Nice (taking in seeing Monaco,Cannes etc) & then spending the next 2 days driving to San Sebastian where we will spend our last 3 days?
Any suggestions as to what to do/where to visit/overnight etc in the two days enroute to San Sebastian?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

I wouldn't be a big fan of that drive myself. Trains are out unless you want to change 3 times at a minimum. There are no direct flights. You will be renting a car across borders, with extra charges. All in all, I don't think it's a good idea to mix the two destinations.

San Sebastian is a lovely place and well worth a visit but as the man says when asked for directions from Nice to there "Well, I wouldn't start in Nice for one".

If you do make the trip and want something a little special, check out the Parador in Hondarribia, just over the border from France. It's in an amazing castle right in the middle of the town, overlooking the river border between the two countries. The local airport for San Sebastian is in Hondarribia, so it's pretty close to your destination.

[edit] - correction - Hondarribia, not Fuentaribbia

Thanks for your response. I am thinking we might be better off to just fly from Nice into Biarritz or Bilbao & travel onto San Sebastian from there.
It requires a stopover enroute but we don't really mind that. It would give us an extra 2 days also to spend in the Nice area also.

If you aren't fully decided on the Spanish leg of the trip, why not go to Italy instead? It's much easier to access by road and rail from the riviera. I live just outside Nice and drove over to Cinque Terre for a couple of days this summer, very nice but I don't recommend driving around over there.

I think the more sensible approach is to fly from Nice to say Biarritz and go from there. As the above poster mention's it is also only 40 minutes or so on a train from Nice and you are in Italy but I am guessing you have your heart set on your preferred destination but it's a good option also and an easy one should you fancy. Nice is great it has great train connection's as mentioned to Monaco and into Italy but also west.. Antibes ( must visit imho), Cannes, St Tropez etc...
