Hi all, so here's my situation, I'm a bi-guy from Cork who's not out but would like to try a night out on the gay scene.

Looks like I'll be up in Dublin for a couple of days (mid-week) in the next week or two so just wondering if anyone can recommend somewhere for a newbie to go for a couple of drinks, good music and the possibility of having a conversation with someone.

I would suggest the Front Lounge for the possibility of conversation. It has a nice eclectic clientele. And is straight friendly as well.

Panti Bar, Dragon, George, Break For The Border, Turks Head, The Globe, Wilde's.

Since when is Break for the Border, turks head, or the globe ,,"gay bars"??

In answer to the OP ,If you want to go to a bar and strike up a conversation,i would suggest the Front Lounge ,the others(Dragon,The George,PantiBa)r have thumping music and one needs to shout to have a conversation .
Anyway good luck and enjoy yourself

The George, Pantibar, Wilde, The Front Lounge, The Dragon.

Pantibar would be my favourite as it attracts a wide rande of clientele and it's drink prices aren't extortionate.

More gay friendly, but does get a wide range, anyway I would agree the flounge is probably best place to go for conversation. The Dragon was very loud last Thursday.

Sorry, if this topic has been discussed gazillions of times. I’m sure it has. Nevertheless, I would really appreciate some advice. So. I’m going to be in Dublin this Fri. I’m a 22 year old lad from the West. I’m straight-acting, discreet, not out and new to the whole gay scene. I’m hoping to hot one of the gay bars or clubs on Friday night. However, where would ye recommend? Was planning on heading out around 9. Would that be too early? I’ll be on my own so where would be best to go to meet someone and have a conversation and maybe bring someone back to my hotel. Again, sorry if this topic has been discussed 100’s of times before but I wiyld would appreciate yeer insights and feedback.
    Thanks lads.

But what time would, let's say, the Dragon get going at? Would 9 o clock be too early to go there at? Sorry, but I'm totally cluless. Thanks.

The Dragon and the George charge a tenner in after 10pm,so if you dont want to pay go before and if you do want to pay go after 10pm!!!!
Front Lounge is free in as is Pantibar (pantibar closes at 1230 afaik)
Have to say ,I admire your "optimism" re "maybe bring someone back to my hotel"....
    Do let us know

@ oisindoyle, as you observed, I am quiet an optimistic, glass if half full kind of guy. I will indeed let ye know if I end up bringing some guy back to my hotel room.
@ MYOB, what place will be dead at 9? You never specified.
@Barna77, I hope you’re prediction rings true and I am spoilt for choice.
So, I’ll prob end up hitting the Dragon (by myself) at around 8 so. Hopefully, it’ll be busy then.
    Thanks for the tips guys.

Dragon so early will be dead, is it even open around that time?

    Enjoy whatever you do

Dragon. Will be significantly more dead at 8.

Go to one of the bars and move over to the clubs later. If you're lucky you may even be heading to clubs with people/a specific person at that stage...

I haven't been to many venues around Dublin, but I think Wilde is definitely worth going to.

There's a student night there on Wednesdays, so ok for a 22yr old. It's located on Wicklow St. Just go, have a few drinks and dance. I was nervous the first time I went to it, but someone came up to me and said hello (by putting their arm around me and shifting me).

Unfortunately, when you ask the cute Latino staff for sex on the beach, they come back with a drink.

There's also PRhomo at the Dragon, and F.A.G somewhere else in town. Are you staying close to the city centre? :)

Well basically most people my age that are straight dont really accept it. Like they ignore u pass comments, Kerrys the worst place ive come across, I go to cork, dublin somtimes but ive never had any problem as it seems easy going! im living in kerry for 22 years and if I go out I am constantly looking over my shoulder, its horrible :-(

Not nit picking ,but is that your perception or is there a lot of homophobia in kerry ?
If it is as bad as you say it is ,then it's truly shocking .

There's a very active LGBT group up and running in Kerry for several years now so I'd say it's definitely not the worst place to be gay. No doubt there is still certainly plenty of ignorance, but no more than in most other parts of the country and mostly it's not malicious - just stupidity. I know plenty of people who are 'out' and living in Kerry and live pretty fulfilling lives.

I think the main difficulty people experience, particularly if they're not 'out', is when they don't have any gay friends locally and this leads to isolation. But Kerry is certainly not a hostile place to be gay.

I guss all I can talk about is my own experience!

Im am out but I am straight acting, thays just the way I am I guess :-)

Younger I always got hassled in school and I was very active in a certain sports club and when I came out all my mates stopped talking to me and I was really pressured to leave.. And this was a big club which I go on with everyone and since I left not one person stayed in contact with ...

I heard about this LGBT club in Kerry which I recently added my name to the text list however I have been told there arnt many people my age in it.. This isnt a big problem however it would be nice to interact wit people my own age.

I cant be fussy and I would still like to try this LGBT club as any social outlet is a help! But I dont drive and most events are on in places like inch beech.and places so im kinda caught :-\

I have to say its really getting to me and to be honest I have joined every gay website and to this day I stil ll try my best but I dont / well cant find any gay friends :-(

I think you should go to Chiarrai Amach events anyway despite what you heard. You have nothing to lose and sometimes what we hear isn't helpful or accurate.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Are you finished college? Just leave and move to Dublin. If you find so unenjoyable why would you continue to live there?
