    1. Are there codecs needed for Windows Media Centre in Windows 8 - I'm getting an error message when trying to view files through the xbox, but the files play fine on the pc.

    2. I had been using Mediabrowser on Windows 7 - it doesn't look like it's going to be supported on Win 8 anytime soon, so can anyone recommend an alternative?

Got point number one sorted -the Firewall was blocking media centre accessing the pc. However the quality of the streaming is truly shocking - essentially unwatchable. Has anyone else experienced this?

    Is it over wifi?

nope, it's a wired ethernet connection over CAT 6 cable. The network test is coming back at 100%. Video files play fine on the computer, so it's something to do with the way Windows Media Centre is streaming from pc to the xbox.

Could there be some other setting that is limiting the stream (as in the way the firewall blocked media centre automatically?)

in case anyone else had this issue, Microsoft issued a fix over the last couple of days.

I use xbmc for movies and TV shows with Media Center 8 for live TV, recording, series link etc.

Nothing beats xbmc for media libraries and nothing beats Media Center for live TV and guide.

I use event ghost to switch between them with my remote
