No power taking off in 1st gear

    Hi all,

I've a 2000 Opel Corsa <1.0l. Grand little car however lately I've been having a problem with it.

Often, when I try to take off normally in 1st gear, the engine does not pick up power when I press the accelerator and nothing happens... car doesn't move. After a while the engine picks up power and the car takes off. However this could after maybe 10 seconds and often happens at lights, junctions, roundabouts etc. It's both embarrassing and potentially dangerous.

Could anyone offer some ideas on what the problem is and how to fix it?

    Thanks in advance.

if that's the case it's a slipping clutch isn't it. Not too clear in the OP

    Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replies so fast.

The car doesn't rev up when I press the accelerator. I press the accelerator, as part of taking off, nothing happens until a few seconds later. Serviced about 6 months ago.

check lambda sensor ,,if that is ok MAF sensor(mass air flow meter) ,it might over/underfuel the engine.hope it works:..or quite likely could be blocked filter /mesh in fuel tank (part of fuel pump setup inside your petrol tank).if that is blocked ,fuel pump wont be able to supply fuel fast enough to the engine when you press gas pedal:)
there should be an access hatch under rear seat of your car ,usually lid held by 2-3 screws , under that is a fuel pump assembly ( screwed in ),check that by opening ,mesh might be blocked.if u upto doing that ,please NO SMOKING:)
IN THIS CASE SMOKING DEFINITELY KILLS!!!!!

First of all check and see if the air filter was changed at that last service. It's a start and probably the easiest thing to check if you are gonna go down the road of checking a list of things. Probably the cheapest as well.

I don't suppose a check engine light has appeared in the last while?

    Guys thanks for your help.

As you prob guess from my explanations above I'm not very mechanically minded so I won't be doing any work on it but one of the buddies is.

    Thanks again.

No worries. It could actually be one of a number of problems unfortunately. If a light appeared on your dash, you could get the code read and it would be a start in which direction find the problem.
