Not sure if Im in the right forum or not....

Over the past month of so, Crows have started to come into my back garden and eat/take away small stones ( about the size of small marbles ) there does be 10/15 at a time, in the garden.
    any ideas why ?
or more importantly how can I stop them ? as there is bird crap all over the place and its disgusting. I have small children and I wont even let them out as there is that much.. Any help/ ideas folks ?

    thanks

Birds eat small stones to help break down the food that they eat. They are stored in the gizzard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gizzard). Is it possible to cover over the area where they are taking the stones?

Can you show a photo of what they are 'eating'.

I've posted this question before for my parents - except the rooks aren't eating the pebbles, they select white ones and fly off with them. There aren't many white stones left now. My Dad keeps watch and scares them away, and it's hilarious because the crows have started to wait on a part of the roof he can't see from the house, but they leave a look-out across the road who makes a warning sound when my Dad comes out. They also know my parents routine, and start to hang around when they know that the humans are about to leave. Really smart birds - but where are they taking the stones? they definitely look too big to swallow. We reckon they're building a patio somewhere.

"The caretaker of a cemetery in the County Londonderry village of Claudy has said he believes he has unravelled a mystery that has baffled locals for weeks.
Thousands of ornamental stones had gone missing from five graves in the cemetery.
Some people feared it was the work of thieves.
But Kevin O'Kane said they were shocked to find that crows were the culprits"
