Ireland isn't ready for Red/Amber/green the majority of motorist wouldn't be able to handle it with people launching on amber, beeping on amber etc - we are a shower of motoring savages.

They should just change all lights to amber all the time. Red lights were invented by the oil companies to waste fuel and increase their profits.

You say that, but according to one poster in the other thread (after Hours) there are indeed some traffic lights here between Sandymount & Aungier street with the UK sequence Red/Amber/Green!

Hard to believe and I can't understand why some of the lights are set that way, unless its on trial here???

I'd take anything said on AH with a pinch of salt.

I am surprised it has not been moved here.

I believe that traffic lights were originally called robots, I was told this by an elderly chap who was a young lad at a time some still existed where he was in the UK.

It may have been to do with the fact that arms moved out from a central pole/column with the colour on, like a train signals rather than lights, Id have to look it up to clarify.

I'd say the french are coming from even futher back than that, over here the literal translation for traffic lights is "the three fires"

Are you sure, I looked and it seems its three coloured lights
    "Three-coloured lights" (<i>Feux tricolores</i>)
    feux is light?
    feu is fire?

I could be in error, but I think maybe not?

IIRC they considered the UK system here.

while everyone would start off sooner form a stop, it would cut down on the number of amber gamblers and so fuel use would go up and through put wouldn't be improved

According to the road signs its feu, ill check tomorrow.
Your explaination sounds more plausible than mine;)
And it wouldnt be the first time things were explained to me 'in error'
Eg I needed some bubble wrap, and the guys sent me down to the stores, armed only with the french word for dildo:D

I dont see how fuel use would go up? and after that, not sure what that means.

The UK system would be good here, but people would still need to watch the lights.

The UK system is better than the system here.

Red -> Red and Amber -> Green.

    It's not just UK system.
Most of the world operate like that.

..maybe so, but I think our system is better. Not everything somewhere else is better.

I still hold my F1 style proposal of five red lights and go go go!!!!

But I would see how the red - amber - green would be helpful.
You can engage gear and build up the revs on amber and then dump the clutch when it hits green!

Any reasons why our system is better?

Think the amber/red at the same time system would work well here. Reduces wasted green time while people react.

I know, someone mentioned it already though

I dont think our system is better, I cant see how anyone would think that, if you can offer your opinion why?

with our current system, the majority of drivers are suprised when the lights go green, in my opinion thats wasted time when trying to move a que of traffic and as cars are more economical at a certain speed and completely unecenomical when stationary (ie 0mpg)
advance warning would mean full use of the green would be made.

I'd suggest at any maintenance, junctions be upgraded or if lights are connected in any network (parts of Dublin?) then they can be upgraded as soon as possible,
    I guess cost prevents this,

The only problem will be the timing to ensure red like breakers dont plough into someone that has a green, but thats in operation already.

but i can see no advantage of the current system?

Encountered the UK style sequence in Omagh frequently, everyone just launches on Amber, so I don't really see the point.

I would like a countdown to green though similar to the newest pedestrian crossings, but that would probably have its own problems.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,452 ✭✭✭Ronnie Beck

You generally go through the same light's all the time. Just learn the sequence and timing.

If you have the same light for prepare to stop and prepare to go it's alot more dangerous especially when everyone is used to a certain system.

Here we have ambler gamblers, people who go through the lights late (rather than stopping)

In the UK people stop sooner because they know the other traffic can go the instant the lights change.

UK system - faster start after you've stopped
Irish system - less likely to have stopped in the first place.

If you mean that extra fuel will be used because people now have to stop,
I think that will be outweighed by the more efficient use of the lights with people being prepared for green (some still wont be ready).

Not everyone gambles with the amber/red
everyone has to move off at the green

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 688 ✭✭✭maxfresh

The name of this sequence is a starting amber

I don't think it will ever be done here because it would be a massive undertaking changing every set of lights eprom (chip with all the timings)

Its not the sort of thing that some new set would use it and others wouldn't . it would have to be all or nothing

    It's not the same though. It's a red/amber combo.

Either way traffic lights should always be approached with caution and prepared to stop
