    Hi there quick question.

Wondering what the engine in the 1.4 golf from c. 2004 is like?

I know that the 1.4 in the mark IV was supposed to be terrible but is it better in the mark V?

Anything else major to look out for in those golfs? Girlfriend is looking at one this evening so would appreciate any quick answers!

    thanks :)

Engine is quite gutless, needs to be pushed and driven very well to get any performance out of it. I am only getting 32-34 MPG so not even great on petrol. Burns a small bit of oil even from new.

However the car is great, comfy and nice to drive and very reliable. Not a foot wrong in a 160,000 kms (06), only pads, tyres and timing belt in that time. Servicing was also irregular with the odd 40,000/50,000 kms between a service. Our golf is the misses car as well.

Timing belt change is important at 70,000, if not done walk away. Any sign of overheating....walk away, servicing should be regular

It's the same engine carried over afaik.

Yes it's the same (horrendously underpowered and unreliable) engine in both the Mk4 and Mk5. The Mk6 has it as well but nobody bought it because of the recent obsession with diesel.

As said, essentially the same engines with the same problems.

If she must have a Golf have a look at the 1.6 8v models.

I have an 01 1.4 petrol engine with 135k miles on it, never gave me any bother, other than needing to top up a small bit of oil every couple of months.

I must have got a good one, as I read a lot of bad reports on this engine.

I will agree that it wouldn't pull you out of bed - the car is too heavy for the engine methinks. I also did a rough mpg test a few times and I always got around the 40mpg mark. Must be a conservative driver too.

I wouldn't be a big fan of the 1.4 16v, but in there defense there's gazillions of them on the market in different guises.
With fairly substantial mileage. Anything from 150,000 to 220'00 being sold as good runners. If the owners keep up with the maintenance they can keep going.
Having said that I still wouldn't touch one.

Thanks for all the replies, didn't know it was the exact same engine, I have heard good and bad stories about them.

It's not that she only wants a golf but this one was really nicely specced, leather heated seats (which is rare in a 1.4 methinks) etc and it is very well priced. The lack of power doesn't make that much difference to her. Anyway looks like it will be next week before she sees it so will know more about it then
