looking for apprenticeship! Help!

Hi all,

Currently looking for an apprenticeship (i know i am mad), looking at anything really electrician, motor mechanics, heavy vehicle mechanics or something to do with mechanics...as that is what i am interested in doing...but i'll take whatever i can get,

Went round all my local garages and rang a few electrical contractors and they have sweet nothing...am also looking around the web everyday and nothing and on fas website but not hearing anything back from anybody i apply for:mad:

so just wondering has anyone on here any ideas about looking for apprenticeship or do they know who is looking for apprentices like businesses or contractors or something like that....

I feel your pain, I am having the exact same problem. We just need the lucky break.. :rolleyes:

Its very tough out there. It's really only by word of mouth, and someone you know. A big problem is that masters simply cannot afford apprenticeship rates with work so thin on the ground, so are taking on people they know and trust and paying below the rates in order to get them their training.

A distant relative of mine is doing the work part of his apprenticeship in the UK but is doing the academic bit here not sure how it works thought.

Try some factories. I served my time in one. You might get one as a fitter or spark. Good luck with your search but not much out there after i finished my apprenticeship i couldnt get a job thats 3 years ago now. Been working in security since.

Yeah they are taking on apprentice plumbers for work in munster. H A O'Neills are probably the best company to be with these days for plumbing anyways. I'm with Jones doing E&I and theres a good bit of work for us, nearly all in pharmaceutical.

Just on the fás site I can see a good few apprenticeships advertised e.g 1st year apprentice electricians, lift engineer, security systems, carpenter, toolmaker and air conditioning.

to the person who said go to college instead, i spent 4 years in college and got a degree before I started my apprenticeship. College isn't for everyone.

yea been applying for all them on the fas website but not hearing anything back, went to college for a while hated it so yea you are right college is not for everyone so am trying to get an a apprenticeship

Haven't heard from any of several I've applied for.

I think they do test questions on the assessment.

What number comes next: 1,2,3,5,8,13_

I'm 25. I feel that my age may be holding me back, that companies might want younger guys.

They might ask questions like:
Why you think you're suited for the job?
How do you handle pressure?
How will you deal with taking orders from everyone?
Your strengths/weaknesses?

Try and find out some info about the Co beforehand, previous clients etc, most have it on their website and try and work them into a answer somewhere.

I'm from Blanch. Yeah it's tough alright, I find it most annoying though when you don't even get a reply saying that you're not successful or even acknowledge that you've applied.

Yeah I've applied with Jones, DAA, Designer Group, basically all and every apprenticeship that has come up on Fás in the last few months.

Dornan Engineering taking on apprentices, pretty decent sized company to get into. Ive actually not seen the fás site so hoping with apprentice postings in about 3 years.

Started my apprenticeship 2 months ago at 23. I was told alot of employers prefer lads with a bit of real world experience, though some employers like 16 year olds they can treat like ****!

I had zero electrical experience going in but did have construction experience.

Even if you get one, FAS are absolute pricks when it comes to calling you back after your first phase.

Nope.
Even a generic email of: Dear applicant we're sorry but your application has not been successful... etc would be better than nothing.

Yeah sorry.. Just worried about it.. It's a plumber apprentice and I have not done much plumbing but trying to get something behind my back.. Like i am really interested in it so I just want to ask really good questions

Oh ok.Some questions i ask
-How many people does the company employ
-What projects have you got coming up
-Do retain people once they finish their apprenticeship

I noticed Kirby Group Engineering are looking for apprentice electricians for work in Dublin. I served some of my time with them. Be worth a go they are a big firm with offices in Dublin, Limerick & Galway.

Kirby would be a very good company to get in with i'd say, had an interview with them before i got my apprenticeship. They'll provide you with a full toolbox when you start which I thought was a nice touch, I spent a fair whack of my first few weeks wages on **** quality tools cause I didn't know better!

That's right and the little grey tool box to boot. I remember my first day on site looking like bob the builder, tools were rubbish quality but enough to get you started while you gathered up your own bits over time. I wonder do they still provide them?
