Calor Gas Heating. Reason to avoid an appartment?

    Hi All,

I am considering moving to a new appartment but have found it has a Calor Gas heating system.

Would it be reasonable to assume the a Bulk supply of calor LPG to multiple appartments would almost be a reason not to move to such an appartment?

From some of the threads on here i have heard of some crazy bills and customer service from Calor.

The latest SEAI fuel price survey puts LPG at approx 1.5 times or more the price of oil.

    http://www.seai.ie/Publications/Statistics_Publications/Fuel_Cost_Comparison/Domestic_Fuel_Costs_Comparison_October_2012_pdf.pdf

On Calor gas website to highlight the savings of LPG versus oil, but conveniently they only allow the selection of a 15 year old 70% efficient oil boiler and the saving is a paltry 100 euro per year based on this scenario.

Would a calor gas bulk install be a reason to avoid the place?

Yes communal bulk storage is a disaster. Whilst own tank is very good, communal storage is a huge rip off.

Just done some quick calculations and i am shocked tbh.

The latest fuel price survey puts LPG at 13.25c /kwh

Lets say a 25kwh boiler in use for 5 hours/day. So max output cost is

    25x5x13.25 = 16.56/day or 496euro /month

Reduce to 70% for boiler not always on full output = 347 euros

    Standing charge 24c/day or 7.20

What am i missing? That seem ridiculous

    Or other calculations

    Calor Gas current price? 2.49/unit
25kw max usage 1.6 unit per hour

    so 1.6x5hrsx2.49/hr = 19.92/day 597/month

half this on boiler using 0.8units/hour = 298 per month to use 5 hours per day for 30 days.

I estimate this calor gas should be twice the price of natural gas so would this 298/month be in the correct range?

I cannot believe a new development would install such a silly communal LPG setup.

So what would be the average cost to use other methods

    5hours per day
    LPG 298/month
    Natural Gas 160/month
    Oil 210 /month

    Would that be about right

    Any help appreciated

With 70% efficient boiler you need to go up with your cost. 30% is going up the flue.
With your calculation the less the efficiency of the boiler is the cheaper it is to run!
