    Howdy,

Selling my Peugeot 307 and a buyer has come forward saying they will pay for it via Paypal and that they are shipping it to England.

I assume this is a scammer?, anyone heard of this lad?, won't put the name/email address on here, needless to say it is a hotmail account. You can PM me if you've heard of it and we can share name/email address.

    Thanks.

Drag it out just for the craic.

The shipping part indicates it as a scam, but I wouldn't have a problem with someone genuine trying to pay via PayPal.

When I bought my car 3 years back, I paid a 10% deposit to the private owner via PayPal.

If something had gone wrong, I would have been able to set up a dispute in PayPal and get the cash back.

They take the car then pay, then they go and open a dispute and get the money back off you, then your left with no car plus the price he payed you owe to paypal.

    Hell No.

I thought about that... you should see the yarn in the email. Reminds me of the Nigerian Prince email.

    Gona just delete it.

I'd imagine that he is probably going to pay more than the asking price and ask that you send him the excess via western union or some other such method?

Scam, the whole paypal thing leaves people into a false sense of security. But the have same scam if you are selling a car or your toaster.

    I don't understand this scam.

Does the person want to get the car? I cannot see how this scam is worth doing, just to get title to a car without paying for it.

Don't get me wrong, I do suspect it is a scam, I just can't see why anyone would go to these lenghts if the endgame is to take the car?

No mention of western union yet ha ha ha. But he was quick to be happy with the price even though he will have never laid eyes on it.

Looks like he has even hacked somebody's skype as the text came from there.

    Amazin.

I guess because the car is ultimately nicked, they have it in UK say, re-reg it and flog it no?, must be big biz if there are people falling for it.

look, i have idea, take piss, accept his offer, then western union will kicks in .... just not send money, but tell them that you send it :D then they will ask you scan and send a picture, make some fake one, ... ha ha ha... make them look stupid in western union office.

Of course it's a scam. 307s can be bought for peanuts in the UK too, nobody would want to go to the trouble of having to import one and secondly what normal person would buy a car without seeing/driving it and agree to pay the asking price?

Tell them you are in the UK on holidays and can arrange to meet them to do the deal. Wait for the lengthy silence then. :D

Don't know why everyone is saying scam without details? Paypal is perfectly fine for transactions like this, they just take a percentage unfortunately.

OP - Let it ride out and agree that it be paid via Paypal if the buyer wishes to pay for it that way. Once you receive the money online, then transfer it your bank account. Then once it's FINALLY cleared and withdrawable - contact the buyer and say the money has cleared by account and you can then arrange the shipping. Just make sure of the cost of shipping before he pays.

Why? OP doesn't have to do a thing but wait until the money is in his bank (3-5 days max depending on the bank) - then work from there.

Which is exactly why the OP shouldn't accept paypal.

    Because Peugeot 307.
Just referring to Paypal part, not car in question - might change my opinion if I see the car the OP is selling.

But why would somebody in the UK want to buy a Peugeot 307 in Ireland when there is a more than ample supply of them locally alot cheaper? We are not talking about a rare car here. Also why would someone agree to pay the full asking price of a car they have not even seen not to mind test drove?

Not disagreeing with any of that - the OP only has to provide an email and see if the seller sends anything - that's why I said let it ride out and see what happens. Won't do any harm unless he decides to ship the car as soon as he get's a Paypal email which he won't since he posted here first.

OP - can we see your car you have for sale? Have you made phone contact with this person? Don't rush into it if it doesn't feel right to yourself.

Yeah, I have bought a car through Paypal and had it shipped, but in this case it's just a waste of time to engage the scammer any further.

OP I presume it was on donedeal? I have a boat for sale and have received 5 or 6 of them PayPal e-mails. COnsidering taking it up with donedeal because I haven't got email notifications enabled.

    Yes, donedeal.

Must check to see have they any warnings on their site about this scam?, or scams like it.

Would it not be Paypal that would be out of pocket at the end of this and up to them to sort out?

I wouldn't be shipping anything until I had transferred the money from Paypal to my account and if Paypal give him back his money without looking into it, then that's there loss.

If you can get the money out of paypal to a bank account, Paypal will be unable to swipe back the money. It would take 3 working days to make sure the money appears in the bank. Once it is safely in a bank account Paypal can go swivel.

If paypal can't get the money off you they certainly won't give it to the buyer.

best is contact paypal regarding such questions, as paypal is connected to credit card, i think , they may withdrawn money off account, not happen to me thanks God, heard some stories, but how is in reality, i dont know, so best is contact paypal.
good few years (6 or 7 years back) i nearly was a scam victim, was my first sale in ebay, my old laptop, been offered 1.5 times more, than i listed, but buyer said, he will transfer money, if ill produce shipping tracking number to Africa. i even packed laptop, but i had feelings, that something wrong there. did read ebay terms and conditions, which stated, that seller have to get money first, then i called to ebay, and girl advised do not post it, as it is scam. then i received an email, if i want receive money straight away, have to click on link , and enter my paypal details .. email and password ...
I rang to paypal, and they said it is scam , and do not fill that web form.

Regarding OP situation, I cannot see any reason somebody buy car here, as in UK they are cheaper, and (not sure) better specs than here. I cannot see any logic in this , so I consider it is as scam, and wouldn't advice OP deal with those people.

OP can waste scamers time, by accepting that offer, and look for further deal details, i am nearly sure, there will be western union involved.

Somewhere was written warning - if it looks too good to be true, run away.

Simple solution. Delete all credit cards off your paypal account. Withdraw the money to a bank account. Paypal cannot take money that is not there. The lad won't get his money back.

Been there done that have several t-shirts.

    Agree

paypal is great for the buyer, but not so great for the seller.

When a dispute arises paypal can come down on the buyers side very quickly.
I would walk away from this, but, if I did go ahead I would close my paypal account as soon as the payment clears. Even then its not worth the risk.
I like my paypal account and wouldnt want it closed indefinitely.

I get these weekly I'd say from carzone and done deal. I've had great fun going along with it and sending them fake western union receipts (there are fake western union receipt generators online) they don't like it when they turn up to a western union office to find their reciept and transaction number is fake. Wastes more of these dicks time than my own. Last time I did it, I was told I should be expecting a visit from the FBI wherever I am..

It's not, generally, his money though. More often than not it's a Paypal account that someone is accessing fraudulently (details phished etc.) so if Paypal can't get the money back it's some other person takes the hit on it. Unless Paypal refund them out of their own pockets

You could always ask him to send cash, in a brown envelope for safety.
