    Hi lads,

I have searched the forum but can't seem to find an answer for my question. I would be grateful if anyone could shed some light for me.

Bascially I am buying a car this weekend in the UK (2008 mondeo titanium tcdi)

I have done the VRT calculations etc I am pretty sure how much the VRT will be but i have heard stories of the NCT centre charging more than the website etc etc etc.

My question is, how long after the NCT crowd give me the quote do I have to pay? I will be getting a bank draft drawn up to pay but wont have it with me when i go down to the centre in case it is more/less than i thought. Have I a couple of days or the same day?

I have emailed the NCT but they are not getting back to me.

    Cheers

I was thinking for that but you can only pay up to €1,500 on the laser card. Cash is max €200 and I have nowhere near enough on my credit card.

    The VRT is about €2,300

I suppose i could get a draft for €2,000.00, cash of €200.00 and the rest on the laser. Would that piss them off though with so many payments?

Sometimes also they cannot give you a VRT quote on the spot when you go in to register, especially if the car has any optional extras. This is not that uncommon as things which were part of the base spec in the UK etc may well have been extras here.

I was in this situation when I brought a car in 3 years ago - I had to leave a blank cheque in the office to cover the VRT when they had worked it out (€3700)! So unless things have changed since then they will take a personal check, so you could just make sure the money is in your account and pay with a cheque rather than getting a draft. Or follow on the other posters suggestions and pay the bulk with a draft and the remainder by cheque/laser/cash.

Do they give you the amount on the day? I've been twice in the past couple of weeks and had to wait a couple of days for Revenue to contact me with the amount (which is always €200 for vin/vet ).

I think in the majority of cases you'll get it on the day unless your car is loaded with optional extras.

Ah, must be vin/vet only, with no statistical code.

Get draft for amount 500E below one you expect to pay, then pay reminder in debit card when you meet them. I somehow feel that there is something strange that they do not allow you at least one way to pay ONLY your tax liability. I mean Ryanair gets chased because of 6E charge, but those folks here require 2.80E for bank draft or 1.5% for credit card to cover payment of VRT if it exceed certain amount - yet they do not include those in quotes. Revenue is happy to always offer at least one free way to pay for all other taxes but that one. It must be all fault of those guys who used to pay VRT in check or single direct debit, which later bounced and state was left with unpaid tax and totally no way to recover it or even find out who tried to scam them. I wish they could make this radical law that would say that tax can be only considered to be paid if check or DD clears...

Just put the amount you expect to pay into your credit card. Simples
