Which would you rather have? A Renault Avantime or a BMW 7 Series (E38).

I'm talking from a styling point of view. A friend of mine is raving on about the Avantime being amazing looking and quirky etc., while I say it's a Megane that looks like it's mated with a Seat Alhambara and then crushed slightly.

There is more to this argument re: performance and running costs, buying costs etc. but for now, just styling. Avantime or 7 series?

What the feck happened my poll?

There is no argument, the avantime is interesting but not elegant.

Avantime. E38 just looks like a fat E39. At least the Avantime is different

I like the Renault, but e38 wins.

There is no wrong answer to this question. There are valid arguments both for and against each car, depending on your perspective.

    Wrong. He's wrong, everyone's wrong.

I jest of course, I know taste is subjective, but only when my friend isn't just plain WRONG. :p

They're both crap in terms of aesthetics.

    Settled :pac:

Me:It's a Renault Megane engine in a people carrier shaped box!

Person: Be nice Tom - we all have our guilty pleasures

Me:Yeah, I do love me a good MPV. I'd recommend it to any suburban mother with a pack of brats!

Person:The hand built thing makes it very interesting to me - that and the fact it has no B pillar! And as mad as Renault are, they make a comfy car!

Friend:It's a very big coupe! Think of it as a different take on a tourer.

Me:5k for a handbuilt Renault people carrier that isn't fast or good looking. Ah jaysus. I'm not a fan of Renault in general, but surely a RenaultSport would make far more sense! As for comfy, you can buy a quicker, better looking E38 7 series for a fifth of the price, and still have the rarity factor!

Friend:7 series is far too conventional in its premise, 3 box design.
There is literally nothing out there like an Avantime... and hasn't been since!
It's not built to be quick, we're not all constantly shopping for sports cars. And I think it's good looking.

Person: I think it's unique styling makes it interesting - maybe even good looking. HOWEVER - the E38 7 series is one of the most handsome cars ever made.
The problem is Road Tax. Totally dead money and even in a 728 it's still killer. Plus they can cost a fortune to run and even more to fix if something goes wrong!

Friend: The Avantime is unique. Critics at the time loved it. The car was a sales flop though... just as the VW Corrando was. And that's being heralded as a future classic.

Person: Also nice - cheap, but again - high tax. Cheaper to fix if something goes wrong though!

Me: A 7 series isn't a sports car. I'm just pointing out that every pro about the Avantime such as 'it's comfy', or 'it's good looking' can be completely overwhelmed by something a fifth of the price, which also has a lot more pros such as 'its a good car' and 'its actually fast'. Just because a design is quirky doesn't make it good. Renault build quality was appalling up until 2008/2009 or so, you know that car is going to develop a new noise every time you drive it. Slowly. While people look at it and go 'what the **** is wrong with the back end, its only slightly less protuding than a Ssangyong Rodius!'.

Meanwhile, I'd buy this, tax it, still have saved 2k+ over buying an Avantime, sit in the renowned comfortable interior of the E38, use my 220bhp or so to overtake you, all while being looked at by passersby going 'Oooohhh what an amazing car', who then don't even notice the Renault people carrier 'coupe' driving behind it.

Please note that it's only a bit of fun, I'm just out to prove him WRONG.

Have to admit, bmw would really have to be right colour and wheels.

Lets be fair, it looks like nothing else ( closest perhaps to the bizarre mating above )

    Still the bmw...i think

Love the E38 but the Renault is FUGLY!

Maybe it's 'before its time' though. ;)

There is a reason, that the numbers, the Avantime was sold it, are quite low.

German tank ANYDAY, over the French mutant offspring of a Multipla and a SSanyong Rodeo, eeuw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,718 ✭✭✭Matt Simis

Yeah I get the Avantime is different and I love the one touch, all windows down party piece and the fact its pillarless. I think its a great MPV, far more interesting than the rest of the MPVs.. it was designed as a "coupe" MPV. :)
But not in isolation and compared to what a normal car is and looks like, an MPV is as exciting as the An Post delivery vans.

Then to compare it to an E38, its a joke of a comparison!

What is it exactly, approx 2300 Avantimes sold worldwide? I've only ever seen 2.... Or maybe it was the same one :pac:

Avantime better than an E38? That's like buying a Multipla for its looks

Great stuff, his argument has been proven WRONG.

Now to get him to admit his taste in cars is appalling. Yes I am a complete child.

Costs less to put an advert in the Classic section of DoneDeal these days than it does to put one in the regular Cars section. And DD are doing nothing about the people who've cottoned on to this.

No it hasn't. The best you can hope for is to show that a majority agree with you, which is in this case worth SFA. :)

I told him I'd retract all my comments, and would admit that I was completely wrong about the Avantime styling IF the BMW lost.

Ah the joys of a cargument sometimes.
