I'm looking to buy a laptop/notebook for schoolwork and surfing the web mostly.. I really don't know much about laptops so I could do with all your help :) I'm looking for a slim/sleek one and that's fast.. I wouldn't need it to be top class in any way because I don't need any fancy applications but I would like a reliable one on somewhat of a budget being a student .. Please recommend any laptop you think fits the bill.. Thank you :)

    1) What is your budget?

Up to 800ish.. Preferably cheaper though

    2) What size notebook would you prefer?

    c. Thin and sleek but I'd go up to around 16"

    3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.

I live in Ireland but I could buy online

    4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?

    No preference

    5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?

    No

    6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?

Browsing the web, taking notes, watching movies sometime, listening to music

    7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?

Both, will need to be small enough to be brought around in a handbag

    8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?

    Not really

    9) How many hours of battery life do you need?

    Whatever is standard

    10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?

I would like to see it but it's not absolutely necessary

    11) What OS do you prefer?

    No preference

    Screen Specifics

    12) What screen resolution do you want?
    Again whatever is standard

    13) Do you want a Glossy/reflective screen or a Matte/non-glossy screen?

    Either

    14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?

    Somewhat

    15) When are you buying this laptop?

Whenever I find the right one

    16) How long do you want this laptop to last?

As long as possible. 7 years

    Notebook Components

    17) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive?

    Again whatever is standard

    18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD Burner, Blu-ray Reader or Blu-Ray Burner?

    No

    Thank you everyone :)

Slim and sleek seem to be your main criteria and it be around the 15.6" mark.
I'd suggest the ASUS K56ca in argos for 539.
Its slim for a notebook and has a reasonable i5 processor (ulv so slightly slower but longer lasting battery) that will be more than capable for the tasks you mentioned.
Tis an excellent spec for the price and should be good for a couple of years.

Brought around in a handbag? Not sure any laptop is that small unless you've a big handbag.
