brother in law is looking to change his tractor and has his eye on a 97 NH 7840 SLE. 4wd, 4 spools, air con, good tyres and no turbo. Says it looks clean and seems fairly straight came off a tillage farm. Dealer is looking for €15k for it. Does this seem a fair price as if he dosent take it i might be tempted. I have driven a few and i do like them. Was looking at a 7810 (€14k) and 7635 (22k) but they are crazy money. Going to be renting a bit of extra land from an elderly neighbour from next year and will need a bit more grunt and grip as its a bit hilly, got a bit of a scare spreading fertilizer for him last spring.

with the way the weather has been over the last few years and with an eye on upgrading some of my equipment over the next few years as well as the better comfort and safety i'm open to the idea of trading my beloved 2wd 7610. as my dad reminded me he used to do beet with a dexta and a major and thought he was in heaven when he was doing it with a 5000 and a 7000 as they had a PUH, closed cab, power steering and more power.

enquire about if anything was done with gearbox, have been told by a couple of lads that the early sle gearboxes gave bother, id say it would be dependent on what kind of lad was driving it too, great tractor imo for 100hp(i think) they are an all rounder

    Scrap collecting????

Asked him about gearbox as the earlier version ie the ford badged white cab ones had an issue with the dual power. This one is the NH version and has the newer gearbox.

    Check out this link http://www.tractortorque.com/?tag=new-holland-tractors-tm155-tm175-tm190-8360-8560-7840-7740-7635-6635-8160

    Also for specs http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/6/3/635-new-holland-7840.html

Price seems reasonable imo for buying off a dealer, private you might get similar for for 500 - 1000 less?

You could try this guy with yer trade in? http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/tractors/4117220

Beware of prices that seem too good to be true, they usually hide a past.

Cool. Going to stay away from the turbo ones as not all of them are factory fitted and lobbed were lobbed in afterwards. If the engine wasn't set up for the turbo then I could be in for trouble down the road.

Are there many with turbos retro fitted? Saw a ford badged one with turbo stickers, are these just stuck on to make them look genuine?

I got a NH one a few years ago, no turbo. Was going to get one with a turbo until a local contractor tipped me off on the retro fitting. The one I was looking at had a turbo fitted a few years later. Got it checked by a mechanic and he reckoned it wasn't get enough oil cooling. Heard afterwards it had been pulling a low loader and excuvator around so the engine had been given a fair dogging.

There is no such thing as a 7840 with a factory fitted turbo, many were turbo'd from new though by main dealers and it made a great tractor out of them. The engine was well able for it too.
    Same story with the TS115.

108HP 6 cyl as far as i know, after fit turbos were usually rated to add 12hp to an engine.

Local contractor has two turboed examples. Uses them for mowing in front of his self propelled. Rock solid reliability. But he is very meticulious with servicing all his stuff. Iver in Cavan

Standard is 100hp, not sure what the turbo adds. Would be wary of having a turbo on an engine that wasn't designed for it. Engines designed with turbos have extra cooling loops for the oil. More power means more heat. Just cos its stuck on by a dealer doesn't mean the engine is ready for it. Wonder how your warranty would be effected if there were problems don't he road.

reckon any plans of going for a 7840 might be scuppered.
Farm across the road is rented and lad who has it is drawing harvesting beet. He called over yesterday to ask if he could leave his gear in my yard overnight (had stuff robbed off one parked in a field earlier this year) and i said grand. He is using a 7840 to draw the beet so I was asking him about it. Parked it next my 7610 and its a good bit bigger (more then i thought). So much so that we tried putting into the sheds and it was too high on some of them. Cant get into my machinery store (can move the cross beam up and cut sheeting though) . wont fit into the slatted house either and wont fit into the cubicle house, and can only get into the calving pens from one side. This could be an issue as i use the tractor to clean these out, and also if i needed to lift animals in an emergency as the digger also wont fit, have used my uncles 5610 and loader in the past but he now also uses it for sparaying and has the wheels set wide permently.

There is a surprising lack of low profile tractors of the type i'm interested it. Prices of masseys, seris 35 and TL new hollands and JXU cases are out of my price range and the older cases are not great. Not many JD's or fiats around with LP and before you ask not looking for a zetor. Might end up with the situation where i would need to keep the 7610 or get a smaller tractor to get into the sheds, but that again would reduce my budget. Getting an older 4wd may not be great either as many of them have a lot of work done are still commanding big money for decent quality.

the fiat 90 serious wouldnt have a fierce high cab. look at a 110-90 maybe or else a massey 4355 or something like that
