Query on Aer Lingus

    Hi All,

Not sure if this could be answered but when I was booking my Xmas flights home (from Edinburgh) I booked one way as I wasn't sure about the return date (given friends and family all arriving back wanted to see what their agenda would be ).

So I went on to Aer Lingus about a fortnight ago and saw a one flight from Cork to Edinburgh for any day between 27th and 30th December is over 200euro. Any reasons for this? Dublin is flying for 90 euro roughly with Ryanair and Aer Lingus.

    Thanks.

Less competition and capacity? Less cheaper seats available and what was available has probably sold out already.

    Supply and demand perhaps?

Many will travel to Edinburgh post-xmas for Hogmanay so it'll be an expensive time to travel on that route.

As previously stated, likely supply and demand, could be that many of the seats are already taken for those dates and the few left can be sold off for a premium to those willing to pay.

I've considered all the above and S&D is obviously the most apt, but the same flights for the last 3 years were nowhere near that price. I initially thought they've mixed up the dates for the Munster Edinburgh match in the Heineken Cup. Will have to get the Aircoach to Dublin and fly Ryanair I think.

Was going to stick something on their Facebook page (for the lolz of course)!

The obvious answer is competition and supply and demand. Those dates are when people will be travelling back to Scotland after Christmas and of course people flying to Scotland for New Year, skiiing etc.

In Dublin you have higher capacity and greater competition as in Ryanair.

In fact what you see there is a perfect example of what happens when Ryanair is not in competition with Aer Lingus.

So next time someone bitches about Ryanair, remember that. Without them fares would be a lot higher. Back in the day, the Dublin - London route was practically a cartel. The airlines all charged high fares. There was a nod and wink system in place to avoid ruinous competition. Of course Ryanair is not immune to upping fares on busy routes. On many of their routes there are very few really low fares.

    Yep route needs competition,
here's hoping EIR keep developing the route on a year round basis which just might bring in a competitor if it proves succesful,
Some yield manager holding out for all those high yield folks to head to Scotland seems far fetched but who knows, one thing is for sure not tooo many good weeks in a year on that route, probably why it still is under development with just one airline, here's hoping it grows , nice to have the link tho :)

Yeah I know that, saw that on a recent rant someone had on it. My comment was tongue in cheek.

Thanks for the replies. I agree the route needs competition, I'm actually suprised Aer Lingus don't stick on a full size plane rather than the Aer Arann but I guess it's to do with AE "franchising" the route.

Lesson learnt on my part, next year I'm booking the return in the same booking and taking my chances with the social aspect... or maybe just take the ferry!
