Just got the order forms for the new tags that will be taking the sample from the ear for bvd. I however have four pairs of tags left that they tell me will not be able to be used after the first of November. Am I therefore ok to register calves with these tags before the first of November? Thanks for any replies.....

i got mine too, i assume you mean january not november. I have tags left over too. my understanding is that i can still use these but will need to attach a 3rd button tag to take the samples.

I notice that the duration of this scheme is 3 years but may contunie. I wonder if it actually do what it plans in the 3 years?????

You can still use these tags, but if using on a calf born after the 1st Jan you need a third button tag matching the official tag number in order to test the calf for BVD.

The calf cannot be sold until BVD status is known.

Looking at that link the tagger in the picture looks like the one I have for the supplementary (button) tags, are you sure this will not work with the new tags?
ffs I only bought that tagger last year

If you have the one for using the BVD button tags that one will be fine.

Got my letter today. What's the story with sending the samples? Is there a certain sample bottle to used or can i go and a box of them from any supplier. How soon after birth do have to be tagged and sampled. We give the calves about 2weeks before we tag them. Try to get the tag well into their ears but without catching the vien in the year. Had to cut off 4 tags to allow the ear to heal from calves I bought in this year as the calf had a sore ear.

Sample bottle will be supplied with the tags. The tag number will also be on the bottle.

Tag as soon as possible after birth, this will ensure that the calf does not pick up BVD from another source and you can be sure if you have a PI that it contacted BVD within the womb.

Tag calves between the two veins and there should be no need to cut off tags.

Do they come with the button tags too as I will use up the tags I have already. Yeah I between the veins but in order to get it well into the ear it can a bit too close to the veins when the ear is too small.

Thanks for replies, have been helping out an elderly neighbour coming up to her herd test and we have found out that even though all her calves were tagged there are four not registered that are over sixmonths,if she registers before the first of November will she not need to use the tester tag for bvd??

I want to get BVD tags to use on older animal im currently buying in to determine their BVD status. No numbers needed just to take samples. does anyone else supply these or do I have to ring the wonkers in Mullinahone to get them.

Follow the link, order test tags using the current tag numbers. You will establish BVD status and have these animals proved BVD free for selling on.

thats no good to me as I want to put on a BVD tag on the animal the minute it comes inside the gate after being bought in the mart earlier in the day, put on the button and send it off that day, get the results a few days later and if positive straight to slaughter. I will never be selling on and also would prefer if I didnt have to deal with mullinahone

so going forward from Jan2013 is it going to be 1 new set of tags that do the whole job or will it still be the big yellow tags and then the button tag for BVD?
