curing a deer hide

    Hi,

    Got a lovely doe yesterday evening and managed to do a pretty nice job on the skinnkng, so was wondering if anyone had cured a deer pelt, or know somewhere around east cork I could get it done ?

    Kurt Ecker in Kerry I think does it, not sure how much it costs though.

    Have you salted the skin? If not its probably too late. The hair will slip if its not salted straight away.

    I have not done it my self but my gramps use to brain tan his hides and make buckskin jackets.I am sure you could look up brain tanning on youtube.

    vie taned a few my self,the first one didnt work out as planned but the second came out pritty good.i got the chemicals from an american company mckenzie taxidermy supplies.enough to do a few hides for around forty quid i think.you can also use alum powder which you might b able to get from your local chemist but its a bit pricier.as some one else said look up on google you cant go too far wrong.or maybe you can ha ha

    The way to do it is to pickle it in a sulfuric acid solution then tan it with chromium sulphate and then wash that off neutralize the acid with bicarbonate soda and then oil and stretch.
