I am currently writing up a record management policy and I know that the records have to be retained for 7 years.

However if there any specific legislation I can refer to in the policy?

You did not give enough info to reply properly; if it is for a limited company refer to the Companies Act, but obligations arise not just in primary legislation but through contract or regulation or "best practice".

So think about the purpose of retention, is it related to accounting /tax or data protection/contract............that may help.
