Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning

Following on from the excellent Universal Soldier: Regeneration, Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning reteams John Hyams with Van Damme and Lundgren in what looks to be one of the most enjoyable over the top films this year. Reviews are universally excellent with many reviewers calling it the best action film of the year and many claiming that it's more thrilling an enjoyable than The Avengers, Skyfall, etc.

US: Regeneration was the surprise of the past decade, it took a franchise that was one of the worst around, the three previous sequels are unwatchable and delivered a well made, somewhat intelligent and balls to the wall action filled film.

No word on an Irish release date but I asked Hyams about it awhile back and he's fairly confident that we will see it early 2013 on Blu-Ray (both 3D and 2d) and DVD. There's a small chance that we may even get a theatrical run as in the US it's doing fantastic on VOD and pretty damn well in it's limited run.

It's not bad. The story wasn't the greatest and I think I got lost at some point (was playing FM at the same time)

Action very good. The fight scenes are top notch.

but god do JVD and Dolph look old

A truly terrible movie !! Loved the previous incarnations of US but this is so bad it's criminal. The flashing strobe lighting for the brainwashing sequences nearly made me sick.
To be fair the final 20 min are ok when the fighting starts but it drags for so long before that.

Regeneration was fantastic, one of the best action films of the past decade. It was so good that it nearly made up for the previous 3 sequels which were beyond bad. I'm still quite optimistic for Day of Reckoning, going to hold off for the Blu-Ray rather than watch one of the rips online, a film like this good or bad deserves people getting behind it. It's a low budget effort that everyone invovled in invested a lot and it's nice to see a filmmaker who embraces practical effects work and good old fashioned fight choreography rather than simply throw in lots of CGI spectacle.
