Cheap Boarding advice

I know theres one on skiing already and most answers will probably be the same but...

I'm looking to go on my second snowboarding holiday, at the moment it's just me and one buddy who has never boarded before, i'm hoping to get at least 4 but HOPE is a big word, anyway we're looking to go cheap, we'll probably end up booking with directski as trying to arrange everything separately is neither of our strong points. Last year i went to Söll during the first week of February with my now ex-girlfriend and it was fantastic and the prices weren't so bad, but we missed a lot of our lessons due to her falling on ice during the first lesson, but we each ended up being able to ride frontside without falling

At the moment we have no dates set in stone so we could aim for the later resorts,

Anyway here are my questions
Would we be better off,
going to france?
self catering? (if we had the numbers)
look to go with a bunch of random people we don't know?
Aiming for a later resort like late March, early April?

I was looking at La Plagne, Söll (again), Mayrhofen
