    Hi Folks,

Can anyone recommend a dog trainer in North Co. Dublin? We got a Beagle pup a couple of weeks ago and hope to start classes either close to Christmas or early in the New Year.

I heard the IKC do some in Swords, but there's nothing on their web site.

    Thanks,

The classes are on Tuesday nights in Cloghran. (Beside Coachmans Pub)

    7pm for younger puppies
8pm for older puppies and adults.

There is a small registration fee and then it is 5 euro per class pay as you go.

There is also ringcraft training for show dogs at 8pm

Dog Training Ireland have a great puppy socialisation training class.
    Can't recommend them highly enough.

Who does the classes up there? As in the name of the person? And can you just rock up without pre-arranging with someone?

I go to Dublin Dog Training in Swords, John is great, does basic classes and then you can move onto agility or higher levels of obedience

    Y - John is a dog genius.

The Kennel Club classes in Cloughran at the National Show Centre are great for starters + really accessible - you can just turn up+ pay as you go.
Theyre great on dogs but not on email - just turn up! Its only E5 a class - + you get a cup of something hot + a biscuit!!! Theres lots of different people about from joe soaps to top breeders; so you get a good mix! People on the door are very friendly + helpful + your dog dosnt have to be a pedigree or a " breed" to attend.
You can change * tutor*, choose different classes, or just hang out and when your dog grows up (!)ir gets better you can then always join in the flyball or agility. And its indoors + dry! Bonus!
    Id highly recommend them!

No, John is Dublin Dog Training, I think based in Estuary Kennels? Which is also in Swords, but the other side of Swords from Cochran.

I don't know John Walsh, but I thought the original question was asking about John ward of Dublin Dog Training? According to his website, he does classes in Estuary Kennels, and in Drumshanbo.

Yeah but then Peteb asked about the IKC classes and John and there is a John Walsh that runs those ones so thought he might be asking about him :)

Just to clarify I was asking about John Ward of Dublin Dog Training. So is the answer it is not John that does them? Have already been to his obedience classes.

i think these days that people don't like rocking up to places on speck, without at least checking it was ok before hand. At least that's the way i'm feeling about it. I'd like to head up but when i get there how do i know who to go to?

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

Or where to go to! :) Its 5 euros for the class but since I dont drive, its 40 euros for the dog-friendly taxi there and back!

I'll head up with him soon.

I'm taking the ringcraft class on Tuesday so if you see a blonde woman with a Green IKC vest on, come over to me and I will tell you where you need to go. There will be several people there taking classes with the vests on.

My boy is 7 and although is fine with sit, stay etc he pulls a lot on the lead and has no recall. I would like to get a bit of training to help with those 2 things. He also has very bad manners when it comes to other dogs. He'd near choke himself to get over to them for a sniff when out for a walk, although he's not aggressive, it can be very hard to control him as he is such a big strong dog. Arms do be pulled off us!

Would it be normal for people to bring older dogs fro training there?

When you drive in park anywhere. Go down the right of the building down the ramp, head inside and there will either be a desk right there and let them know there its your first day there and what you want to do. If the desk isnt inside the first door it'l be in the second set, you wont miss it. I think the first time is €8 not 100%

You will then be directed to the right for obedience and to the left or near side for ring-craft. The far side of the hall is for socialisation and more obedience!

I'm there about every 2nd or 3rd week with my rotts!

    Wow, cant believe my luck.

I've been looking for something exactly like this to bring my dog for training and to socialise with dogs, and a €5 a go AND I live 5mins from the show centre.

See you all tomorrow eve :P

I can also vouch for John Ward at DDT, I took one of my springers there about 2 years ago who started to become dog aggressive. After a few puppy, obedience and also 7 months at agility, my fella is great! John's classes are laid back and well informed and after going a few times it's like having another family! Reasonable on the pocket too! :)

DeVore, where are you coming feom? Im in the same situation! Would love to do some obedience and agility with my little lady and have been put off by the expensive 5/6 week courses in some training centres. As Im in a crappy retail job, my hours change from week to week so commiting to those courses seems a bit of a waste of money!

Carpools would be great if we could all get a group of local folks who are carless! ;)

Does anyone have a contact number for the lads in Cloghran to clarify what classes they do at what days/times!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,000 ✭✭✭andreac

There is no number. The classes are on every tues night. Puppy classes and general training and socialisation is at 7pm and ring craft for showing is at 8pm.
It's run by the Ikc so if you really need to talk to someone you can call the Ikc but they will just tell you what I am.
    Classes are 5euro.

Can anyone tell me what the minimum age/requirements are for the dog training at the show centre? Our 9 week old beagle still hasn't had his final '7 in 1' injections yet, do we need to wait until he had had this?

There is no minium age as such however your puppy needs to be fully vaccinated so you need to wait until these are all done first. Also the puppy should be worm free.

Great, thank you! I think the vet is going to do his injections this coming week, so by next Tue he will be 1 day shy of 11 weeks old.
We have a beagle, we have only had him 2 weeks and he is already starting to misbehave by pushing his boundaries. He is becoming a little snappy with us, nothing we say or do will get him to stop. Can anyone offer any sort of advice?

Hiya, can someone tell whereabouts exactly are the classes - are they literally next door to the Coachman's Inn? I know where that pub is, but I wouldn't be overly familiar with the area. Thanks :-)

Heading towards Swords, the Coachmans is on your right. At the next roundabout take the third exit and the entrance to the National Show Centre is a short distance on your left.

Yes they are on this Tuesday. I'm taking one of the ringcraft classes.

7pm for puppies, 8pm for older dogs. Ringcraft classes start at 8pm.

It costs €8 the first week & €6 euro after that. Pay as you go.

If you need to get going sooner than that op, one of the APDT Ireland certified trainers in north Dublin might be able to help:
