sunroom - advice re windows?

We are building a 4m x 8m sunroom at the back of our house. The back wall will be south facing and the side wall will be west facing.

Thinking of having 3 velux windows on top.

Wondering if there are some professionals/homeowners out there who would be able to advise on the number and size of windows we would need on the south (8m) and west (4m) walls.

The east wall backs onto our boundary wall so no windows there.

    Thank you.

If you have 8 metre of glass facing south and 4 metre of glass on the westside i would think that you will not need any velux

I would leave out the velux windows, i have a sunroom with tiled roof on and no velux windows. When the sun is shining it is sometimes too bright and i put sunglasses on if i'm reading or watching TV. If you have 8m x 4m of light you will not need anymore light coming in through the roof imo.

Just to clarify, we have not decided on 8m x 4m glass. These are the measurements of the walls.

We are seeking advice on the number and size of windows we should put on these walls.

A lot depends on the roof structure, for example is it a lean to roof or other, what is supporting the roof across the 8M span, pillars at intervals with concrete heads above, or a steel structure, same question for the 4M span.

Who designed the sunroom, usually this detail would be part of the design process and the glazed area divided up according to the number of opening windows you want in the Sunroom.

On the Velux, be aware that light which currently iluminates your home, i.e the area you are building out from, will be reduced by the solid roof, the Velux might help here, again depending on the roof type.

As the extention appears to be 8M X 4M, what plans did you draw up for planning, these questions should have been considered at that stage

its highly probable that planning was not required as 8 x 4 = 32

i notice that the sun room
east wall backs onto our boundary wall so no windows there.

so detailing at this boundary must be perfect to ensure that no planning is required ;)

i have seen cases where extensions abutting boundaries had over hanging eaves etc which negated exempted status.

We are applying for planning because of other issues related to the house.

We are at the stage now of drawing up plans with the engineer.

He suggested 4 windows on the south (3m each) and 3 velux windows.

We are trying to decide if that is enough of if more would be better,

is the rear wall gabled or hipped ?

3 sounds about right, as long as they are significant in size ie 940 x 1140 type and not smaller.

I see you and I had the same maths teacher :D I presume its 4 windows at 2M = 8M

2M windows are quite wide, especially if you have side openings, that width can put a strain on the hinges, even top openings at 2M wide can be troublesome.

Thats quite a span, so again can I ask what is supporting the roof over that 8M length.

Are there no windows in the 4M length, if so perhaps for balance you could have 6 X 1.3m in front, and 3X 1.3m in side, that could also be balanced with 3 velux in the roof assuming its lean to.

    Yes same maths teacher!

    I meant 4 windows (3 FOOT each!)

Again, we haven;t decided on the roof. Probably slanted.

    Here's a couple of ideas.

(Mod's, these are standard brochure pic's, nothing to which I am associated. )

If you have a west facing wall then put at least one window in there to catch the evening sun.
