Hi I'm currently looking to buy an Audi a4 1.9 tdi or golf tdi with a budget of 4000.
Would like your views on which would be better and also links from donedeal and adverts with cars that you think would fit the bill. Thanks :)

Good news for you is that there are plenty... And I mean plenty, available. Bad news is that they're still generally overpriced for what most of them are.

Any reason why it has to be either of these options exactly, or are you open to better suggestions?

No no reason I suppose :) will always listen to suggestions, only thing is it can't be higher than an 1.9 diesel for insurance reasons

I take it you're doing the mileage to warrant a Diesel? Or is it for other fuel availability reasons that it should be diesel? ;)

Haha no nothing like that , don't think I'd chance it tbh, not worth it:D. Just would prefer a diesel to be honest , mileage done wouldn't be serious.

A 1.9tdi elegance skoda octavia would be a good option. Bigger than a golf and as good in every way if not better but near half the price.

Why? They're very similar cars mechanically barring cosmetic differences

Explain to me how a golf is better than an octavia Im talking about the elegance spec which is as good a spec as any golf has. They are both vag cars so same parts etc.

I have heard they are a fairly reliable car but there ( in my opinion) a woeful looking car. They age so badly and I think this is why the likes of the golfs and a4 s retain there value, they still look fairly decent:)

There not for everyone but I said I'd suggest it. They are seriously reliable. My mum has a 2011 1.6tdi my dad has a 2005 new model 1.9tdi and for the money they are a great car. The 2005 has not aged badly I don't knoe what you mean there. I have nothing against golfs but don't see why people pay so much more for them. The golf would be no good to us anyway small boot and I'm 6foot 2 so I don't think I'd fit in the back the odd time I go anywhere with my parents. Just my opinion if you prefer the golf go for it. Octavia's hold there value as they are bought cheap and hold there value.

Tbh, how a car looks to me is massively important, if I don't like looking at it in my driveway, I'm never going to like it. So I wouldn't have an Octavia but they are an excellent car all round.

If you want a nice comfortable diesel car, go French would be my advice. :)

Appreciate the reccomendation:) there just not my cup of tae :) .. If you spot any good a4s or golfs with low mileage and no stupid kits through up a link. Thanks again

Either engines are very good, I've had two Audi A4's.
They are not overpriced as stated above - you pay for what you get, pure quality craftsmanship.
    Vorsprung durch technik

No problem hope you find a nice golf or a4 best of look with your search.

I said golfs were overpriced not a4s. I personally love the Audi a4 and they do seem to be a good car. Just hard to get a nice genuine one the hasnt been modified and ruined.

    What kind of Peugeot ?

The Peugeot 406 diesels always gets great reviews on here, especially from one fanboi! Hopefully dgt might stop by, always gives good advice on them and knows way more than I do! :)

I might just stop by indeed :p

Large, cheap to run and comfy. XUD units are indestructable, provided it hasn't been fiddled with. 660 a year to tax, peanuts to insure. Run away from Lucas equipped stuff (mostly 306's)

What mileage? Plan on going down the felty route? (Golf and A4 are prime candidates for a dose of felt :pac:)

Haha na do I feck, there's so many felt specs about Donegal town that if I keep her standard it'll probably stand out more : D

I have an A4 and even I think you're going a bit far with that quality craftsmanship/Vorsprung durch technik stuff. A lot of attention goes into having plastic a grade better than a VW (which in turn is a little better than a Skoda). Suits me right now but I don't think it's fundamentally a better car than lesser stablemates.

Personally I don't like the softer seats of French cars on long journeys but generally suspension will be much more suited to Irish road conditions than many German cars.
