Recording on Saorview boxes?

    Hi everyone;

My mother was in a shop a week or so ago asking about Saorview boxes, specifically recording functions on some of them.

A certain surprise emerged from what various shop-people said: that if you connect a Saorview box with recording capabilities to a television that's more than 5 years old, the box won't record right, one shop even had a display to this effect as they were getting a lot of grief about it.

Is there any truth to this? Are all the boxes like that?

They may be referring to regular single-tuner Saorview boxes connected to older non-digital TVs that it will not be possible to watch one channel while recording another.

The Triax TR212 is a twin tuner receiver which will allow you to watch one channel on the TV and record another channel to an external HDD.

Walker will be launching a twin-tuner PVR soon which will allow up to 2 channels to be recorded to an internal HDD.

Absolutely none of the current Saorview boxes are certified for recording. They are not PVRs.

No doubt the new Walker box is Saorview version of Vestel Freeview HD PVR rebadged something else. Which implies NOTHING negative about it. That's how the "market" is working.

    That's correct.

That appears to be the case - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=81406047#post81406047

I'm nothing to do with them except a user, but the 4ife (for life) SV201 records just fine. It is NOT actually SAORVIEW certified, but receives and records the channels and has the EPG. I use an ntfs formatted USB stick which avoids splitting the resultant TS files. It was sold at Currys/PCWorld though I read on their site that it's now been discontinued. The recordings are not encrypted and transfer nicely to a PC. Media Player Classic works just fine, and Format Factory will convert them to a form that can be edited or archived on DVD if you wish. Strangely VLC media player does not play them, and TS Doctor will not read them.

At present you can't watch one channel and record another,
nor can you do live pause while recording.

TV connected via SCART cable so age is not an issue.

Unless you live in an area where you have good UK terrestrial overspill freesat PVR boxes offer ease of use and you can then use a saorview box as a top-up.

PVR isn't a huge issue with Saorview because of
    RTE +1
TV3 a lot of content being available on UK channels.
    RTEjr repeating early morning RTE2
TG4 repeating quite a lot of stuff , eventually

Really it depends on your viewing habits, and don't forget that when you buy a new TV , it's almost certainly going to be a saorview one so you would be able to use the set top box to record stuff in the background.

After Christmas there should be some better T2 PVR's but they will cost a lot more. There will probably be a few secondhand set top boxes because people get TVs and stuff.
