Turbo for beginner

is it worth the extra money for the display

Personally, I focus a lot on cadence and power when on the turbo, so a display is good. But for a given gear and resistance setting, monitoring speed is pretty much the same as monitoring power, so if you've an existing bike computer with a cadence sensor that you can attach to the back wheel, you can save the money.

I am in the same boat with regards to getting a turbo for the first time and there is so much choice out there it mind boggling. My reasons are also similar to the OP, need to get more work in on the bike and dont fancy the wind rain and 'dodgy' road conditions through the winter.

Some guy in work commented about not getting a fan type but get the magnet type???? In those above would they be classed as the magnet type?

Sorry if questions are stupid but I really am new to the whole world of cycling :)

    The Satori is very good.
The Booster is just a Satori with slightly more resistance, so a little bit quieter.
The Flow has some electronic wizardry.

If you want to do HR-based workouts and have a HR monitor, the Satori is a good choice.

Got the Satori at the weekend. Very solid, impressive piece of kit. Perfect for me, like you new to this game. First session last night while it lashed rain outside. An hour and forty minutes - mother of all sweat-fests! Great workout. Quiet enough but I think 'quiet' is a relative term when it comes to turbos. Great to have the resistance lever and get out of the saddle. Iphone in its carrier on the handlebars allowed me to watch a movie at the same time which made the time fly. Overall, very impressed with the Satori.

Did it take you long to set up Myksyk?

Not really. Assembly is a pain simply because the instructions are poor but there is actually very little to it (which makes the poor instructions even more frustrating). Fitting the bike takes very little time and will become very quick as the first fitting is always done very cautiously. I'm doing another session this evening and I expect fitting the bike to take a couple of minutes max.

aye, once it's setup once it's simply a case of clipping in the bike, should be very very fast

Pardon my ignorance. I'm new to cycling but I'm just wondering why people wouldn't just buy a separate exercise bike for the €200 and avoid having to hook their bike up to it?

Because cheap exercise bikes feel crap and good ones are horrendously expensive.

Also, a turbo folds away to almost nothing, space-wise.

..also handy as a stand for adjusting bike fit and minor maintenance

Rollers and trainers can also be cheaper than 200 clams.

Does anyone think it would be any good?

I've never used it or seen it, but I imagine it's not terrible. Tacx are a good brand, I doubt it would fall apart. However, I imagine it would be very noisey, probably less friendly to your back tire than more expensive models. Also, it requires you to get off and change the settings on the unit rather than having a controller on your handlebars. I'd say that alone would make most people wish they'd spend a few bob more for a quieter and prettier mid-range one like the Blue Motion.

Also, it's maximum resistance level is comparatively low, but I honestly don't really get what those numbers mean

No idea, but at a simple level all a turbo has to do is lift your back wheel off the ground and apply some braking / resistance. With respect to changing the resistance levels, you can set a high resistance and use the gears on your bike to vary it during your workout.

Noise can be an issue, as can suitability for longer sessions. Not idea how this unit rates, but at 70 bucks it's probably worth a punt and would be easy enough to sell on if it didn't suit. 2nd hand one fetched €75 bucks here a couple of weeks back

Thinking of getting the Satori but I'm a cycling novice.

I'm just after getting a Specialized Allez Sport and the Satori will stretch my budget (although that seems a great price for it).

Is there anything else I need to get with it though? Like am I fine to use my normal tyres on the bike or should I change them or anything?

Pardon my ignorance in relation to the topic.

i never even knew of these things!!! Is the aforementioned site the best to order from or can you get them directly in Ireland, based on what's said above the Satori is the one to go for. Its an MTB I cycle, so bigger wheels I guess but no issue afaik from website

I have a Tacx Satori..easy to set up and gives you a great workout but I only manage 30 minute sessions at most since it can get quite tedious. Some serious discipline is required (on my part) to use it consistently and the noise is comparable to a drill particularly at higher resistance levels when you are going flat out.

My plan is to set it up in my sunroom, which is tiled, and use it while I watch TV in there. Would I need the sound very high on the TV to drown it out though?

Yeah i've had a turbo for a few years and it can be as boring as hell. Discipline is a big challenge, an hour on a turbo can feel like a day, so music channels on the tv or the ipod with headphones on is about the best solution.

Good turbo session last night ... 2 hours/55k. Iphone + netflix + earphones do the trick. 'Slumdog millionaire' last night! Did not know you you could sweat so much. You'll need plenty of water to hand. Its great to get the miles in when it's so shi**y outside.

2 hours  I managed 50 minutes on a cadence workout through an iphone app and thought I was going to die. (more work to do!!)

depends if the two hours were steady pace i would have thought, you can do an hour workout on a turbo that'll wipe you out

Ah no, just a steady pace as you can see by the Kms. Two or three pushes at a higher resistance for a kilometre or two but generally just keeping the heart rate at 130-140.

I actually bought it in "Snow and Rock" (think that's what it's called) in Dundrum Shopping Centre. Although I had done a lot of research this was a bit of an impulse buy as I just came across the shop by accident and there was the Satori. In my weakness I caved and bought it. Probably could have got it cheaper on Bike24 or something ... but then I would have had to have WAITED!!!! There was 20% off so it was down from something like €310 to €250. This of course was justification for me to tell my wife (and myself) what a wonderful bargain I was getting and take out the credit card ... I am weak and pathetic! Anyway, there you go ... at least I'm getting good use out of it.

I hook my iPhone up to a projector (ACER K330) and use Bluetooth earphones (Sony MW600) and I'm currently watching TDF 2011 while working on Tacx Endurance workouts (http://tacx2009.ilink2.nl/en/tacx-coach/trainingsprogrammas/krachttraining/index.dot). What a fantastic tour. Allez Voeckler.

32 minute long endurance session.....are you repeating this a number of times per session?

Anaerobic endurance. That's the first so the rest are a bit longer. :D

Hi lads, question regarding turbo training. Obviously I'd be using the training bike on a turbo which isn't exactly cleaned on a regular basis. Do you get any dirt/grime/oil flying off the bike when you're on the turbo?? I've been mulling over the idea of getting one but I don't have a shed so would be using it in the spare room

My LBS are selling the Tacx Blue Twist trainer with a free front wheel support for €125 as a special offer this week.

I know somewhere online I can get the Satori Pro with front wheel support and mat for €175 delivered.

Is it worth the extra €50?
