What makes a good coach?

Following on from a previous thread:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056799181

Kinda got me thinking what exactly is a good coach?

For the few coaches here what do you feel your role is - mentor/ teacher/friend/personal motivator/task master/ psychologist/ Physiologist/ Biomechanical instructor?

Also for people who are coached be it in a club setting or privately. What do you look to get from you coach and what made you pick a particular coach (no naming names or anything this is not a praise poster x etc thread) but just may help people who are coming off the marathon in trying to decide what is best for them

Also what sort of characteristics do you think the likes of Daniels, Lydiard, Salazar etc have that make them great coaches?

I've recently been pondering this myself. Will be interested to see what people think on this.

    Good thread.

I didn't shop around - the opportunity arose to work with someone who has raced at a high-level and has lots of coaching experience. It would be stupid not to :)
Too soon to see what the benefits are, but what I have so far is a training plan, and what I'm expecting/hoping for is someone who'll tweak that plan according to how I get on.

"It's not the coach who makes the athlete, it's the athlete who makes the coach".

A great coach can't make a silk purse from a sows ear! Great coaches know this from experience.

It's a wonder any of us bother then, day in day out. Great athletes clearly just appear out of fresh air.

This could be a good thread, it just hasn't started yet.

Bit of truth to that in some circumstances but flip side is plenty of coaches have destroyed athletes as well!

I can see the point you are trying to make but I am talking about a person who improves what talent is put in front of them. The mention of coaches was about the characteristics of these listed coaches not there abilities as such.

In this sense the term coach is referring to people who takes an athlete regardless of there level and improves them.

A true sense of the word coach rather than a recruiter

    Short answer for now.

A GOOD COACH IS SOMEONE HOW CAN GET THE BEST OUT OF THERE ATHLETES REGARDLESS OF THE ABILITY.

Our coaches are very general in fairness. We are trying to split the group sometimes with some do marathon training and others not.

Then again its hard to be specific to a person needs.

I am going to go my own way this year and use the club sessions when it fits in with my schedule(really mean baby schedule) !!

I don't think Club Coaches are general to be fair. Most are trying to get the best for the club ( championship races 6k to 10k) but most will be open to giving advice to other athletes.

No it's not hard to be specific to a persons needs if that athlete approaches the coach for specific coaching
