Hi, is it possible to install radiators onto the pipes coming off the hot water tank! It's an old style 36" x 18" copper tank next to the open fire which heats the tank, the tank is also heated by an immersion!

you prob have an old indirect system,,,,means you dont have a coil in the cylinder,,,,you can not link a rad circuit on here with a pump

you will need to change the cylinder to have a coil and open vent it

Is it a big job to change it? Is it a big job to run radiators off the pipes? Going through walls digging up floors? How many radiators could you join to the system? Would 5 or 6 be to many? It's a 3 bedroom house!

Apologies now but I am completely ignorant of these things. Would it require the tearing up of floors etc? Could an oil tank system be set up to heat the radiators also? As in if the fire wasn't on could you turn on the boiler?

yes you can get a dual coil cylinder,,one for your back boiler and one for your oil boiler if you put one in,,,could be a good idea to purchase a dual cylinder anyway just incase in later time you install another heat source,,(oil boiler),,,,,downstairs obviously will be the biggest problem as you have concrete floors probably with timber or carpet over them,,,,,is it possible to run along your skirting in any way downstairs etc and if you need to go into another room,,maybe drill the wall to go through

you can interlink the systems so both heat sources can do the rads etc

If the back boiler is only heating the hot water at the moment, the actual boiler could be quite small and not provide much heating through rads.

The extent of the job would be hard to guess without seeing the house.
As sanbrafyffe said you can run along skirting and through walls but you can suffer with air locks on an open vent system with this some times.
You might be better off just using an oil boiler and pressurised system to do the heating (and hot water) with the back boiler left just heating the hot water

I think the ideal situation would be having both fire and oil heating the radiators and the fire/immersion taking care of heating the water. How much would ye think ball park it would cost to have it all installed from scratch?

New dual cylinder water tank? Oil tank, boiler, pump and 6 radiators off it?

havent a clue on the price mate,,,,remember all the pipe,,,wiring the pump, stats, boiler, burner etc aswell

if its only a normal semi detached 3 bedroom house your back boiler should be alright

    Hi
You would be looking at €7k to get this job done.
The Seai grant should cover some of the cost .

    €400 for heating control upgrade
    €160 for new HE boiler
€50 for BER following completion of works.

Before going down that route, get a recommended installer to have a look at your system. Getting some the advice that you have here is a bit far from the truth and accurate advice can only be given upon inspection.
