Sales Races - Horses purchased at a recognised Thoroughbred Sales Event Qualfiy for entry.

Only those horses purchased at the event can enter. There is typically an incremental entry fee structure, say Sales held in July , pay €100 by Sept 1st to enter, then €400 2nd forfiet Dec 1st, 3rd entry fee €500 Feb 28 & final fee €200 at declaration stage (24 hours). There is also a maximum field size, with balloting if required. The entry fees generate a good portion if not all the prize moeny. However, there is an amount of advertising that has to be funded with the sales events so you'd need to find an insider to work out the P&L (which is commercially sensitive info so best of luck with that).

There are a number of high profile sales run during year. These cover both national hunt and flat. Tattersalls UK runs 2 yr old sales races in the UK, I think in Doncaster. One for fillies, one for colts. Tattersalls Ireland have at least one equiavlent for the the fillies & colts, run at Fairyhouse. I recall a horse called Seanie winning one recently if you want to look him up. They also run one for horses bought at their July National Hunt Sales - there's a bumper at the Fairyhouse National Hunt meeting in April for those who qualify. Goffs used to run the Goffs Millions in the Curragh on the flat for those purchased at their sales events. If my memory is correct, Finsceal Beo ran 2nd there before winning the 1000 Guineas in the UK the following season. There is so much info on the subject, perhaps its best to write to the main Sales organisers & ask for any brochure/bump they have available. Also do a trawl of their websites.

Racing Post have introduced a variation on the concept in the last 2 yrs, with a €10K yearling bonus added to horses purchased under certain criteria. Not sure that would meet the sales race criteria but worth checking & crossing off your list.

They seem to be quite popular events, with maximum fields and huge prize money - generating publicity for the Sales organiser, the Racecourse, the industry etc etc along with a nice taking for the winning owner. Not a waste of time imo.

Best of luck with the project.

I can only comment on the Tattersalls and Goffs bumper races for stores sold the previous year. We used to enter our horses in these races but stopped as you need a certain type of horse with a certain type of trainer to win it i.e. forward horse with trainer willing to push them hard early on.

The other reason we stopped entering horses is we did the maths. Here are the entry costs for one of the races in April 2013:
€250 to enter on 5 Sept 2012, (plus €13.50 bookage fee),
€250 extra (plus €40 bookage fee) if forfeit not declared by 28th November 2012
€250 extra (plus €40 bookage fee) if forfeit not declared by 20th February, 2013,
€250 extra (plus €40 bookage fee) if forfeit not declared by 18th April, 2013

    There were 132 entries on 5 September = €35k
    Assume 100 enter on 28 Nov = €29k
    Assume 60 enter on 20 Feb = €17k
    Assume 20 declare = €6k
Total = €87k (€12k of this is "bookage fee")

    Prizemoney is €100k

So it appears that Goffs is simply underwirting the process and has to put up at max €13k to have their sale branded in such a way. And it would not surprise me if a lot of the €13k comes from HRI anyway.

I don't know what the flat races are like so can't comment but we don't bother with these types of races anymore.
