Blower fan making strange noises

In my 98 e11 corolla saloon the blower fan is randomly making some strange noises, like it is rubbing or has something in it. I can get this noise to stop by randomly cyclying through a combination of fan speed and direction.

I have taken the fan out before to check it and it looked in good condition and seemed to be clearing everything around it.

Does anyone know what could be causing this problem? Its confusing me that it can go away so easily after randomly appearing.

It could be the blower wheel grinding a bit. In old cars they go bad after years of use and need replacing.
You'll notice it's when you turn or speed up the noise starts.

If it is this issue then it'll get worse - but just turn up the radio a bit :)

I didn't know that. Yea, it generally starts when I turn or brake.

It's far too noisy to be covered by the radio.

I'll price one in the local motor factors and see from there.

Unless anyone has any other suggestions. Cheaper ones like.:P

There is a pretty crappy "fix", half a can of WD40 into the air intake before the fan. This should lube it up but tbh it's a bad fix and might make things worse (for instance wd40 inside the car unless you block the exit vents...). Messy solution but it's your dollar.

Would removing the old fan and spraying it in WD40 then do the same thing with less of the mess/hastle?

Maybe, give it a go and report back :)

Get a second hand one from local dismantler. As pre-lift E11s are widely available, it won't be a big problem.

Price won't be high either. :)

Would that not have a high risk of having the same problem?

To be honest, you're the first one I know, who has this problem in E11, and I know many E11 owners (I am as well). :)

If scrapyard owner is fair, will allow you to return faulty item you bought from him, but ask first. If he's not fair, find another one. I made exactly the same when bought 2nd hand alternator - got seller's promise he will accept return.
