    It's more a case of "the British have been!", isn't it? I doubt that Britain today has anything like the same capacity for military intervention that it used to have.

    They never had a huge land military, they used divide and conquer tactics and fiddled in local politics with a lot of carrot and stick games being played. I suppose having guns gave them a huge advantage over what they were fighting against, which was usually opposition using stone age or medieval weapons and tactics.
