Hello there, I have recently been accepted into a course mid term and was just wondering a few things.

I did my primary degree here and finished 3 years ago. I thought I knew UCD like the back of my hand but it seems I dont. Would just like to ask some what probably seems to all you basic questions.

What on earth does the Ucard do and how does it work exactly?

I notice that google do the UCD email's now. My old UCD email went dead upon graduation. Is it the case that I'll have that email address upon graduation? Trinity have done this for years, I'd like my UCD connect email as I think it'd look better on the CV.

What is new in the sports centre and how much does it cost? Sure I paid for 600 euro worth of stuff through the student contribution, might as well avail of all the facilities.

    Cheers for the replies :)

A UCard is your student card.
It has a balance that you can top it up online, or at a few different machines around the place. You use it the same way you used your student card - ID for exams, getting into library, getting into student accom - but if you top it up, you can pay for stuff with it, like printing, some vending machines, and some shops/restaurants. There's a list online as to all the places that accept them, and the list is growing. I'd say eventually it'll be fully campus-wide.

As for if you get your old address back.. I haven't a clue. But even if you don't get it automatically, I can see no reason why they can't give it to you if you ask. I know people who went straight from an undergrad to a postgrad, changed their student card to get their new degree title on it, but kept their old ucdconnect email address. The only slight issue is the 3-year gap you had inbetween your times here, but as I said, I doubt it'd pose a problem towards you having your old address.

New gym is free. You can pay for the pool for the year, or you can pay on a visit-by-visit basis, as far as I know.

Cheers for the quick reply. My point about the email going dead was not what I was asking, what I was asking was do I keep my ucdconnect email forever upon graduation?

No you won't. I was backing doing a masters. About 6 months after I finished my email account was terminated.

Sorry! My bad. The email lasts until about October-November after you graduate.

Cheers for the replies. It's a shame we dont keep the emails. The email which is your name and followed by the University looks great on a CV. Suppose this is the one thing Trinity does better than us, anyway, onwards and upwards.

It's ridiculous. You'd think after forking out 8k to do a masters they would allow you hang on to the email.

Why? I actually think it looks terrible. Your plastering where you went to college into someone's face. All things aside there are recruiters out there who see "XYZ" college, had a bad experience and instantly hate you. Been there on that one.

I also wouldn't rely on UCD to maintain the email service. Even if Google are providing it. Too risky going forward.

Mine is my first @ my second name .ie and they don't cost much at all to set up. Looks great on a CV and extremely professional.
