The really important stuff - tape/hoods/saddle

Where's Bruno the cycling style consultant when you need him? I've done all the boring stuff like picking out a frame, groupset and wheels. Now we're down to the really crucial stuff. -What colour combinations for bar tape, hoods and saddle.

I've seen the sram white hoods lately on a bike and I thought they looked great, and I've also seen red hoods with white tape and it looked spiffing. This is all in real life. I've also googled for images and.... it can just as easily look sh1te. But I wouldn't completely trust photo's, bikes can often be non-photogenic.

There's also a Peter Sagan-style green hood option, which would actually match our team helmets :).

But either way, what's the convention then with saddle - matching?

The correct answer for all of your questions is black* because all colors in these parts ultimately end up some shade of black in the end.

The Tourminator can ride what he wants.

White saddle and tape, I don't like coloured hoods. I seem to remember seeing a lot of fake tan rubbing off on people's hoods. And it wasn't Ras na mBan.

I actually had a white saddle on my Felt and three years later it was still presentably white, and after a slathering of Jif (cif?) it was like new.

White bar tape is a bit of a mare fair enough, but the frame colour is dull so I think the bike needs some colour.

Less is more my man, less is more. Like the one I linked you before I'd keep it nice and simple.

I'd match the finishing kit with the splashes of red that'll already be on the bike with the Sram Red & red logo on the head tube. Black hoods, black tape, black saddle/red stripe. Black. Murdered out. Classic.

Rule number 8 applies in this case:

Or, if you don't like those rules, Numbers 17 and 18 here might suit

Hoods should always be black. Tape and saddle must always match.

    That is all.

Having thought about it, I've decided I don't like it after all.

I'm not sure I like cork tape, it's always got that ..... fleck sort of effect. Though it is comfy I'll give it that.

    That is all.

Match what though - each other, or the hoods i.e. black.

I found green cables matched the green hoods beautifully. Go Team Ireland!

Obviously each other, otherwise there would be no choice if everything was black!

It really depends on the frame IMO and the selection of peripherals.. you don't really have to match. If for example half of the frame is black and the other half is white, you can continue the same scheme, black saddle with white tape, but also it matters what colour seatpost/stem/bars you are getting. Black all is the safest option, but sadly is the most boring too. But again, you can accessorize that with cables, bolts, cable ends etc... Loads of options out there!

It really does depend on the frame, I'd usually say bars and saddle must match but sometimes black saddle and white tape could work but not the other way around.

Then again I do like the shape of Srams hoods, so you could match the hoods with the saddle and have white tape?
