Does any one have a recommendation on a good reference book for Irish mammals, something that will give good information on habits etc. I am looking for something that will help in a photo project i have running a the moment.

Exploring Irish Mammals, by Tom Hayden and Rory Harrington, is a really good book. Its out of print now though so hard to get - worth checking any local libraries for it though!

Mammals of the British Isles, handbook 4th ed.
    Stephen Harris and Derek Yalden

Gives good background. Probably easier to get hold of then Exploring Irish Mammals.

It seems amazing that there are so few books to be had. I tried four bookshops today and little to nothing on mammals but plenty on birds.
    Will keep looking

There is a complete list of literature on Irish Mammals available on the Biodiversity website here click references.

There are very few which cover multiple mammals, most are scientific papers or reports but maybe you will find something of use in the list.

Collins Complete British Animals: A photographic guide to every common species is not a bad little book. Covers mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

It is nowhere near as detailed as Mammals of the British Isles which FR mentioned (a fantastic book if you can source it), but will be a lot cheaper and will cover most species of Irish based mammals.

Thanks Lads, I have managed to obtain a copy of "Mammals of the british isles". I have a Librarian friend searching for the Exploring Irish mammals, a book she described as in the top 5 of disappearing.
