Just curious about this. I live on my own and every winter the boiler sees little use so its not a case of servicing it based on usage. I was justw owndering should I still book a full service for it. It has not been serviced for nearly 5 years.

Half of boiler supervising is making sure everything on the boiler is safe, other half is efficiency.

So yes it should be done

For some a service could of saved a life(s) for others a service has saved a life(s) but I'm sure there's lots who think a service is pointless, most boilers I service are not overly dramatic but you never know what you'll find on a service thats why there checked for safety but each to their own.

I always find a boiler that is not regularly serviced ends up costing more in the long run, in that, the seals that have not been frequently removed tend to be more brittle, metals seem to more fatigued, screws/bolts seized into casings.
On top of that, add in safety & efficiency.
On the other hand many so-called serviced boilers might as well have not been.
I was called to service a gas boiler and when I told the client that I could not service it as the kitchen unit that was built around it prohibited the casing being removed. I told her that she needed to get a carpenter to remake the to suit the boiler, but was told that the guy who usually services it has never had a problem servicing it, but she never actually saw him working inside the boiler!

Does a boiler need to be serviced yearly for efficiency or is that an over kill ?

It is for efficiency, safety and longevity of the boiler.

    A boiler service is

    1. Called for as per manufacturer instructions once a year

    2. called for by home insurence at rec intervals as rec by manufacturer

After that speculation is not to be discussed. If there is any plumber on here that tells you its so many years since they serviced there boiler i would be reluctant to use them as they are failing to act to manufacturers recs there for under law neglagent.
