The version bundled with the mbox is ProTools LE which is a restricted version of Pro tools with less functionality.

Does the student version have restrictions?

Didn't they drop the Pro Tools LE tag with version 8? There were 2 versions of 9 - Pro Tools & Pro Tools HD. Same with version 10 except they now bundle a free feature restricted version with some hardware - Pro Tools SE.

By my reading you are getting a bargain with full Pro Tools 9 with interface, you just have to go through the inconvenience of installing an older version & applying & installing the upgrade. Pro Tools HD will of course be considerably more expensive.

    Cheers

    JJ

Yep, LE doesn't exist anymore, discontinued.

That looks like the full version of 9 too. Just make sure it isn't PT express, but I would wager it isn't.

No, it will be the exact same as the regular version. Only difference is the "student" in the title. :)

    +1 with Flyswatters post.

I got Pro Tools 10 student a while back and although it is a big step up from version 8 and previous but I am quite miffed at the lack of surround support.

This is a feature you will either need or not but as I need it and my Uni demands Pro Tools and surround mixes I find myself more fond of Cubase 6.5 which I also got for the student discount recently.

    Mbox Family
Bring professional quality to your personal studio. Mbox interfaces offer premium sound, performance, and portability. Choose a Mbox + Pro Tools bundle to create music and audio with industry-standard software, or an Mbox or Mbox Mini interface, featuring Pro Tools Express software, and elevate recording.

Looks like its just express, wonder what restrictions that would come with tho?

"Pro Tools Express includes many of the same features of Pro Tools 10, though it doesn’t include the new Clip Gain feature, Beat Detective, or the Timecode Ruler—and it’s limited to a maximum of 16 stereo audio tracks."

    Avid site

Plenty possible with 16 tracks though.
