    Hey folks,
I've a surplus of silage for the coming back end and a mate of mine enquired about buying 70 bales of 2011 silage off me.
What sort of money should i be looking for the 2011 silage, it's in good nick, has held it's shape and i'm feeding it myself at the moment.
The price would be out of the yard price, he'll collect it himself.

If quality is good and its dry and from a clean sward u could look for 35 bucks a bale.2011 silage in 99.9% of cases is way better than anything that was saved this year

hearing a lot of people talk about 30 a bale round here, but most lads seem to be paying 25 a bale. Not sure whether its this years or last

why not sell some of our 2012 silage, and keep the 2011 silage for your self( going on the assumption that 2011 is better than 2012 silage in 95% of cases)

Whatever is paid for it isn't too bad as long as the bales are decent. Alot of average enough silage baled with the year that it was unfortunately :(

Good quality bale silage 28%DM at 70 DMD is worth 28 euro/bale with barley at 280 euro/ton. I think these were the figures that Teagasc gave at a BTAP meeting. Now if paying 350/ton for lucky bag ration at local co-op then this quality silage is worth a bit more.

OP if your silage is leafy and dry it is worth around that.

Our BTAP advisor advised us that meal at €300 per ton is the feed equivalent to silage at €22 per bale @30% DM. If bales have a higher DM% then they are worth less. Basically he is saying that if you are short silage then it is cheaper to buy meal to supplement at €300 per ton than to buy silage at above €22 per bale.

I bought 8 ton of a balancing ration for my cows last week @ €270 per ton.

I was comparing the value of good silage the figures are as above for barley at 250/ton they would incres by 10% for barley at 280/ton.

Well i have 80 dmd silage in the pit and got a few bales tested and they came back at 83 dmd average 15.2 protein and 52% dry matter.Ipicked up a second hand lely tedder this year and i reckon it has already paid me back. All the bales cut had only 3 to 4 weeks max growing time and where what was outside my 21 day rotation for my milking cows.

I imagine that these bales are about 500kgs so I value them arounfd the 50 euro mark in feed value. These would give a live weight gain to weanlings of up on 1kg/day with minerals

they where all bailed with a mchale fusion bale and staked one standing up and another sitting on top of it.They have all held there shape and are solid as a rock.Very hard to beat a fusion bale.Have my freisan weanling heifers in a week and im feeding the bales to them along with a kg of stewarts 18% calf reared nut and they are happier than i am on it.Proab no need for the nut but im only going to feed it for 6 weeks or so and hopefully have them on grass by mid feb. They are holstein heifers and i like to have them at about 350 kg for mid april which they will easily be

I be more inclined to give them 50-60 grams of a beef mineral and a the same of cubicle lime (Calcium builds bones) I would not be bothered with ration.
