    Have just been listening to Radio CRC - Walk around the Town by Gary Browne. Very interesting, especially re plane landing after flying Atlantic which I hadnt heard about before. Interesting historical summary of that historic towning

    I didnt hear it but Castlebar is an amazing town with a deep long proud history . From the races of 98 to the land league Ernie O Malley the inventor of the mono rail
    Recently Its sad to see so many empty buildings aorund main street. Im still upset the Humbert closed :( the ancient shop front and window should have been preserved .
    dalys hotel now the ancient barracks is gone , I mean the town was named after a barracks .

    Meant to say the broadcast I was referring to was about Ballinrobe.

    Agree that Castlebar is also a most historic town.

    I think it's name comes from the Barry family - Caisleán an Bharraigh?
