After the truly terrible 'Haywire', hopefully this might prove to be better. Good that the trailer gives away very little, which is a change from the norm these days.

It's his very last proper film (his very last film will be one for HBO)

TBH, I thoroughly enjoyed both Magic Mike and Haywire. Thought they were slick, playful affairs. Haywire is a very weird parody of action movies, and I was sufficiently entertained. Neither were masterpieces, but they showed a director with a keen visual eye and a distinctive voice working well within Hollywood confines.

So think it's a shame he's 'quitting', although I think by his own admission it's more an hiatus than a retirement. He'll be back, most definitely. Hopefully this 'last' film will be a nice note to end on.

Soderbergh latest - bye bye big screen, hello small screen.

This is showing as part of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival. Can't wait to see it.

I though Haywire was dreadful aside from the obvious novelty factor and a criminal waste of enormous talent. However, still looking forward to this.

Didnt think Haywire was dreadful either. Ive seen far far worse action films. The UFC woman in the leading role was convincing in the fight sequences which were well put together and she wasnt that wooden in acting ability. It was weirdly paced though, some sections seems overly dragged out I remember.

Haywire was fairly mediocre I thought and a bit strange, wouldn't call it a parody though.

Just saw this tonight. Cracking little thriller. Slow to get started, but once it gets going it doesn't let up.

I'm not usually a fan of Jude Law, but he did a fine job here. Rooney Mara was very good too.

I really enjoyed it too, even if it does get convoluted and increasingly contrived in act 3. Up until then it's a playful, smart thriller that subverts expectations just enough. It would have been easier to go the whole
"big pharmaceutical = evil" angle but it goes a different direction without ignoring the themes of corporate shenanigans.

I'm a big fan of Rooney Mara, but Law does indeed partially make up for his wasteful performance in Contagion (although he was working with a damp squib of a subplot there).

I really thought this was boring , though on the plus side Rooney Mara gets naked again.

"Last theatrical film"...maybe... Is this just a cheap marketing ploy for the film?

I thought it was okay, perhaps overly long as, once you've worked out what's happening, there's still a lot of film to get through.

This is actually his second last theatrical film. His "last" is Behind the Candelabra which is due out in the summer.

Although as Soderbergh as said himself, he's just taking a break, not quitting. He'll probably be back in a year or two.

Behind the Candelabra is a European theatrical release but was filmed for and will be on HBO in the US. As a result Side Effects is considered his "last" theatrical release.

Was a crackin' film for the most part and I think all in all it gets away with it. I read one review that said it turns into an episode of murder she wrote in the last 20mins or so and I'd agree with that. But having said that its still head and shouders above most films of its kind.
The acting is a class above. Well except for Catherine zeta jones. Shes not bad or anything just a bit obvious. Jude law plays a stormer and Im delighted he didnt have to put on a ridiculous american accent. Rooney mara was off the scale in the girl with the dragon tatoo. Honestly I think she was ripped off not to win the oscar. Cant say too much about her performance here as I'd give too much away all I'll say is shes brilliant. Looks amazing aswell, shot through filters to give everything a golden hue. Its an interesting subject aswell. I knew somebody who took anti-depressants and she said that you'd be surprised at how many people are on them. Its mad to think that theres this volume of people propped up on medication just in order to function in everyday life and you'd never know it by looking at them.

I thought it was an ok film, looks gorgeous, interesting beginning, kind of sags in the middle, but then rises again.

I think the cast did a nice job, I didn't think much of Rooney Mara in that Tattooed Dragon film, but I think it was the character that annoyed me more than anything else, but she's very good in this.

I actually found the beginning the slowest part, it seemed to take ages to get going. All that messing around with how low she was feeling...I understand why it was done, just felt it could have been condensed a little.

Can't make up my mind about the film, not sure if I enjoyed it or not. It's clever, but I don't know will I be recommending it to friends

:D that's exactly what I said to my buddy when it was over!....it got really daft by the end i thought, had some great ideas going on but I cringed
at Zeta Jones as the lustful lesbian lowering her glasses
felt like a slick made for tv movie with a bigger budget than normal, not a bad film but had the potential to be so much more

Might check this out in the cinema

    Personally I loved this!

Big crush on Rooney Mara too :D

Saw it last night, annoyingly they played the subtitled hard of hearing version and couldn't change it but it didn't matter too much. This was a solid 7/10 film for me. Interesting and smart storyline, good acting and beautifully shot. Don't think I'd watch it again in a hurry though, maybe once more on DVD just to see if I missed anything.

If it is indeed Soderbergh's last film it's not a bad one to bow out on.

..... This was a solid 7/10 film for me......
    +1

I actually didn't want to see this but the time of the showing suited and the alternative was to stay at home. Was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed it. Won't win any awards but a solid thriller.

I agree with others that (while not entirely unwelcome :P )
    the lesbian bit was unnecessary

I agree with the above it is a very solid 7/10, 7.5 would be pushing it.

I understand now why Jude Law was so cagey talking about it in interviews. I didn't see where it went before it went there.

I chose this over Trance. Might to see that next week, although we still have to see The Croods & Oz yet...
