    Hey,

Ive recently went 19 and have bought my first motorcycle. I got my learners permit back in October 2009. Of course it has since expired in 2011. So I need to renew it before I can insure my bike or even drive it etc.

Is it a simple case of going into my local motor tax office and handing them the 15 quid or would I need to resit my theroy test? I tried looking at RSA website and renewing learner permits but It did'nt give any info on weather I can still renew it seeing as its been out of date for like a year now.

You're grand op. As it's your first LP you can simply renew it for €15 yo yo's! If your LP expired for for than 5 years then you have to re-sit the theory etc...

You might want to read up on the new rules coming in next January 19th for motorcyclists OP seeing that you're under 24. Here's a few links:

Hmm okay so the basic gist I got from that was that there adding a new caetogory called A2? Wont say I agree with that but whatever. Since I got my first Learner Permit when I was 16 and it was only registered for M and A1 catagoryes, is it possible for me to get an A2 Learner Permit when I next renew my Learners Permit this week ? Or would I renew it this week, wait till January 19th and then get a new A2 Learners Permit?

Also on a side note...Was talking to my dad there and he said Id be better off doing my driving test in England or NI. Way easier and I could just it transferred ? Anybody ever heard of this ?

The A2 category doesn't exist yet Ayrtonf7, because you got your LP when you were 16 (A1,M) you can apply for the A but you have to do a conversion module of IBT before you can ride by yourself.

When you do your test next year the examiner will take your age into consideration and issue you a full A2 licence.

Do you see where I'm coming from? It's abit of a messed up system at the moment.

Sure I get where your coming from. With regards to the conversion, because I got my LP prior to 2010 I think I am exempt from all compulsory IBT training ?

Yes for the M and A1. I'm not 100% on this but because you didn't hold the A before the IBT was introduced then you will have to do a conversion module as it's a new category. Ring the RSA to make sure and please let me know!

I just got off the phone with the RSA (After ringing the insurance company first mind you haha) and basically what they said is I would have to sit the full IBT module range if I wanted to progress onto an A category learners permit. I guess it kinda makes sense, it was just unlucky for me that I wasnt 18 before 6/12/10(When IBT got introduced) as I could of get my A before the IBT date.

Guess ill need to start looking at IBT prices and what not....

Yeah that sucks man, had a feeling you had to do some sort of IBT but I didn't think you had to start from stratch :(. All you can do is shop around for the best price or check the Motorcycle forum as you might get someone else to go halfs with you. Most schools offer a discount if 2 people train at the same time.
